"The music content market is mainly driven by the passion for Bollywood"

With the advent of mobile phones becoming an indispensable accessory for most people nowadays, another industry related to this phenomenon is the growth in the downloading of wallpapers (background images) and ringtones.

Complimenting this is the popularity of celebrities and famous people appearing on phones as wallpapers.

To get an insight into this market, IMImobile, a global provider of mobile content and value added services in India, commissioned a study to find out which movie stars were popular on the mobile screen.

The findings of the study revealed that for mobile content, Shahrukh Khan was the most downloaded male star and Katrina Kaif was the most downloaded female star.

It’s not surprising as these two stars are very big at the moment and their fanbase is huge. Not just in India but globally too.

The study also revealed that Hrithik Roshan, Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar and Sanjay Dutt contributed towards the top five downloads for the male actor category whilst Priyanka Chopra, Lara Dutta, Deepika Padukone, and Aishwarya Rai were in the top five female stars.

Bollywood stars are big business when it comes to real fans. In India, it is the magnet for entertainment. Movies being released continuously by these stars put them into the spotlight.

Mr Vishwanath Alluri the CEO and founder of IMImobile said:

“India has the fastest-growing mobile population in the world and is projected to reach 400 million by 2010. Mobile music downloads top the bill and are currently valued at Rs 160-180 crore (Rs 1.6-1.8 billion) in the domestic market.”

“The music content market is mainly driven by the passion for Bollywood & Tollywood and we see a spike in downloads around the big movie releases of the year,” he added.

It was found that most of the downloads were related to ringtones of popular songs from the new movies and their associated wallpapers.

Mr Vishwanath added “We expect mobile music videos to really take off this year.”

Hence, showing that alternative content formats such as video are already being adopted by the consumer despite the size of mobile screens compared to the big screen.
