Women can order sperm like any other online purchase.
Sperm can now be bought online after Dr Kamal Ahuja launched a mobile app which allows women to browse through donors.
About half of the UK’s IVF clinics have already registered to use the London Sperm Bank Donors app.
Dr Ahuja’s mobile application is completely legal and safe to use. It meets the requirements of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA), Britain’s IVF regulator.
The London Sperm Bank Donors app allows women to search through sperm donors for potential fathers.
Women can refine their searches to find the exact kind of donor they are looking for. While the sperm donors remain anonymous, every important detail about them is made available to users of the app.
The unique app allows women to filter through results based on physical characteristics such as hair and eye colour.
Women can also filter donors by their level of education and occupation. The wide variety of filters ensures that the user knows as much as possible about the sperm donor.
Users are able to read a short description about the donor, written independently, as well as see their medical information, skills, and interests. In some cases, you can see a pen sketch of the donor too.
This array of information helps women to make a rational decision on which sample to proceed with.
For those who are unsure, however, Dr Ahuja includes a ‘Compare List’ in the app. This allows users to compare various donors side by side.
When a user is completely sure and wishes to continue, they make £950 payment via the app. The fertility clinic that the woman uses then receives the sample and gives it to the patient.
Women can, therefore, simply order sperm like any other online purchase using Dr Ahuja’s app.
Speaking to The Sunday Times, after launching the app, Dr Ahuja said:
“You make all the transactions online like you do anything else these days. This allows a woman who wants to get a sperm donor to gain control in the privacy of her own home and to choose and decide in her own time. We think this is the first-of-its-kind in the world.”
The London Sperm Bank Donors app is available on both apple and android and is free to download.
While women can use the app made by Dr Ahuja to browse through sperm donors, men can put their smartphones to good use too.
