"Safe to say every Desi had the same plan"

Haldiram’s officially launched its first UK restaurant and drew in large queues.

The Indian snacks and sweets giant opened the restaurant in London’s Leicester Square, marking a major milestone in the brand’s global expansion.

A video on social media showed long queues outside the outlet, as eager customers looked to experience the food on offer.

A text overlay on the clip read: “POV: Haldiram’s first-ever outlet in London and every Indian here had the same weekend plan.”

The caption read: “The crowd, the excitement, the long queues… all for Haldiram’s first outlet in London. Safe to say every Desi had the same plan this weekend! Would you stand in this queue?”

The footage showed a large queue stretching outside the Leicester Square restaurant.

Although people from a range of backgrounds appeared to be waiting, many social media users viewed the opening as a significant occasion for London’s Indian diaspora.

The post quickly attracted thousands of reactions, with opinions divided over the enthusiasm surrounding the launch.

One wrote: “Learn the one cuisine you love, once month, 12 dishes a year, no need to go anywhere unless you’re willingly lazy.”

Baffled by the large queues, another said:

“But Haldiram’s was anyway available at most Indian stores and sometimes other superstores too. This is unnecessary.”

Criticising London, a comment read:

“That only shows how dull the city is when everyone flocks to the same place.”

Some gave their thoughts on the food, with one recommending:

“Guys, go for Khatta Meetha by Haldiram.”

Another said: “Must go there.”

On the other hand, one user said: “I heard the taste is like frozen food! Obviously, they won’t prepare anything fresh. They want profit!”

Another person who had visited the restaurant said:

“I’m guilty of being there yesterday. It is not worth the hype or the price, to be honest.”

A third commented: “Enjoy the frozen food.”

As the video gained traction, Haldiram’s joined the conversation by commenting:

“Delhi called. Leicester Square answered.”

Founded in 1937 by Ganga Bhishen Agarwal, Haldiram’s began as a sweet shop in Bikaner, Rajasthan.

Since then, it has grown into one of India’s best-known food brands, offering sweets, savoury snacks and restaurant dining across several countries.
