"And who were you with? Lady Chatterley?"
Things got heated on Good Morning Britain after Adil Ray appeared to judge co-host Charlotte Hawkins.
With Susanna Reid taking a week off from hosting duties, it was Charlotte Hawkins and Adil Ray who took to the main chairs.
The pair joined the breakfast show on May 31, 2021, but the conversation quickly turned to Charlotte’s supposedly posh accent.
Charlotte told Adil what she got up to over the weekend.
She shared:
“I went out on Saturday night for the first time in however long, so that was a nice experience.”
Charlotte then asked Adil: “How was yours?”
But instead of giving details of his own weekend, Adil decided to mock his co-host.
He replied: “And who were you with? Lady Chatterley?”
Adil then began speaking in a posh accent.
An unimpressed Charlotte responded:
“It’s just not true, I don’t know where you’ve got this impression of me!”
But the Citizen Khan star continued to mock her as he imitated her comment, saying:
“I don’t know where you’ve got that impression of me!”
Charlotte then said, looking rather annoyed:
“No, but that’s judging me on my accent. Just because I grew up in Sussex, I speak like this.”
Adil then said: “Yeah but you like classical music, it all sort of fits into place…”
Charlotte still refused to understand his point, saying:
“Yeah but that doesn’t mean I’m part of the nobility does it?”
GMB newsreader Sean Fletcher then intervened in an attempt to diffuse the situation, pointing out:
“You do know you’ve got two and half hours to go together?”
Charlotte noted: “I know, this is not a good start.
Adil interrupted: “It’s a compliment!”
Despite claiming it was a compliment, several viewers were not happy with Adil Ray’s behaviour, taking to Twitter to make their feelings known.
One person said: “I can’t believe Adil made assumptions about Charlotte because of the way she talks where she’s from and the music she listens to.”
A second wrote: “Adil Ray is so annoying, thinks winding up Charlotte is fun.
“I don’t like that sort of humour. God I miss Piers Morgan.”
A third social media user revealed they turned off the show altogether, writing:
“Sorry @GMB only 5 minutes in and turning off, Charlotte is great but can’t spend any longer watching Adil.”
