"Nothing wrong with Birmingham, Kate."
Adil Ray appeared to clash with fellow presenter Kate Garraway on Good Morning Britain over staycations.
Adil presented the morning show on April 5, 2021, alongside Kate and Ranvir Singh.
While things started off in a very harmonious fashion, Adil supposedly clashed with Kate as he thought she was throwing a jibe at his home city of Birmingham.
However, it ended up being a playful joke between the pair.
They were joined by Dr Amir Khan to discuss the prospect of Brits having staycation holidays in 2021 rather than holidays abroad.
Dr Khan wasted no time in plugging his home county of Yorkshire.
Dr Khan said: “I am a big fan of staycations. I think Yorkshire is a great place to come and visit.”
Kate asked: “Oh, the Yorkshire tourist board have done well out of you today haven’t they?”
Dr Khan replied: “Come to Yorkshire. Sorry. It is God’s own country.”
Kate then told Dr Khan: “Ranvir is also pushing for Lancashire so let’s keep it even.”
Adil then added: “You can come to Birmingham if you want, guys.
“We have got Dudley nearby, Wolverhampton. We have Birmingham. Birmingham’s lovely.”
Kate asked: “Haven’t you got more canals than Venice or something?”
After the segment had finished, Adil defended Birmingham and said:
“Nothing wrong with Birmingham, Kate.”
Kate replied: “I wasn’t saying there was!”
Adil joked: “Yeah alright, OK.”
Kate sighed and added: “Goodness me.”
Adil said: “Anyway…”
GMB viewers took to social media and gave very different opinions of Adil.
One was happy to see him, tweeting:
“Ranvir Singh, Kate Garraway and Birmingham’s own Adil Ray are a breath of fresh air.”
Another said: “Not having [Piers] Morgan in the morning makes life a bit more pleasant in TV world.
“Hadn’t watched the show much since Piers left but switched on today and loved all the team. Will watch now that Adil Ray is presenting.”
A third wrote: “Adil and Kate work well together. I like this pairing.”
However, others were not too happy to see Adil on screen, with one saying:
“Well, I won’t be watching GMB anymore!!! Can’t stand Adil. Smarmy and boring.”
Another commented: “Adil just doesn’t have the gravitas or natural authority to present a news show. Nice chap but not right for the role.”
Adil Ray had previously confirmed that he would be stepping into Piers Morgan’s shoes to present GMB for the whole of April.
He had tweeted:
“Some news for you… I will be co-hosting @gmb throughout the whole of April Mon to Weds, starting this Monday with @kategarraway and with @susannareid100 after the hols.
“I would love for you to make it your daily wake up if you fancy it!”
