"She was in severe agony."
Bushra Bibi, wife of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, has apparently fallen ill while serving time in prison.
On February 4, 2024, Bibi was sentenced to seven years in jail.
She and Khan allegedly married illegally during Bibi’s Iddat period, which is an offence in Pakistan.
Senior Civil Judge Qudratullah, invalidated their initial marriage on January 1, 2018.
Maryamn Riaz Wattoo, Bibi’s sister, claimed that Bibi’s health started to deteriorate after eating the food served at Adiala Jail, where she is being incarcerated.
Wattoo said: “My sister’s condition is still unwell.
“She is in pain and has not been able to eat anything for the past six days.
“We fear that Bushra Bibi is given some harmful food and it is the authorities’ responsibility to bring the perpetrators to book.”
Wattoo went on to assert that Imran Khan and her sister would never separate in the wake of the incident:
“She is with Khan Sahib and she will be with Khan Sahib forever.”
A spokesperson for Bibi, PTI lawyer, Mashal Yousufzai added:
“Bushra Bibi has made a horrifying revelation today that she has been given something like acid in her food, which has caused her immense pain for the past five days.
“She said it feels like her stomach is on fire, and she has severe sores in her mouth and throat, making it difficult for her to eat anything except dry toast dipped in tea or water.
“She was in severe agony.”
The case against Bushra Bibi was registered by her ex-husband Khawar Maneka because her marriage to Imran Khan was un-Islamic.
The petition reportedly read:
“That above said Nikkah and the marriage ceremony was neither legal nor Islamic as it was solemnised without observing Iddat period.”
This is not the only controversy to surround Imran Khan in recent times.
The former Pakistani Prime Minister faces 10 years in prison for leaking state secrets.
This charge is in relation to an appearance at a rally in March 2022, a month before he was ousted from power.
Khan has been imprisoned in Adiala Jail since August 2023.
Former Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi was also sentenced to 10 years in prison.
Naeem Panjutha, a lawyer for Khan, wrote on X:
“We don’t accept this illegal decision.”
Bushra Bibi has five children from her first marriage. She met Imran Khan in 2015 and married him three years later.
