The prequel Student of the Year (SOTY) was a Karan Johar direction, launching three debutants, Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan and Siddhartha Malhotra. Student of the Year 2 is a forthcoming sequel to the original hit, but with a new director.
Punit Malhotra is directing SOTY 2, which will feature Tiger Shroff, Ananya Panday and Tara Sutaria in lead roles.
In the Indian film industry, there is no one better at milking a concept and making money from it than Karan.
Thus, with SOTY 2, Karan has taken the popularity of Tiger and the success of its prequel, to eke out a glitzy high school teen drama.
The trailer of SOTY 2 indicates that the audience will get to see similar old fights, spicy dialogues, a love triangle, plenty of dancing, drama and clichés.
However this time around, unlike SOTY, the key difference is that there will be two girls fighting over one boy.

The Movie Making Experience
Hiroo Yash Johar, Karan Johar, Apoorva Mehta and Fox Star Studios are the producers of Student of the Year 2.
Fox will also be distributing the film.
This is the third collaboration between Punit Malhotra and Karan Johar. This is after working together on I hate Love Storys (2010) and Gori Tere Pyaar Mein (2013).
In addition to the main cast of Tiger Shroff (Rohan), Annya Panday (Shreya) and Tara Sutaria (Mia), Aditya Seal (Manav) will apparently play the antagonist.
Samir Soni has replaced Rishi Kapoor as the school principal. Gul Panag will portray the character of a sports coach.
The original cast members of SOTY, Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan and Siddharth Malhotra will be making cameo appearances in SOTY 2. Alia may also feature in a song alongside Tiger.
Johar put up the first look of SOTY 2 on his company’s official page on November 20, 2017. Shooting for the movie began in Dehradun on April 9, 2018.
The film shooting took place in different locales like Mussoorie, Pune, Mumbai and Thailand.
Two teaser posters featuring Tiger and his look for the movie came out on April 10, 2019. The next day, the looks of Sutaria and Panday also came via another pair of posters.
Karan took to Instagram and released the official film poster on April 12, 2019.
The trailer of SOTY 2 released on April 13, 2019. The lead cast and crew members were present at the launch. Tara and Panday looked stunning in their dresses.
Panday and Tara were first seen together on the sets of Koffee with Karan season 6. Since then they have been regulars on social media.
The trailer of SOTY 2 has nothing new on offer. The only saving grace seems to be the stunts by Tiger.
There were rumours that Tiger will be playing a deaf and mute character in SOTY 2. However, the trailer does not show any signs of this.
The Music of SOTY 2
The original flick SOTY had fairly good songs and its sequel may not disappoint fans to that end.
The music is by Vishal-Shekhar, with the score of the film coming from Salim–Sulaiman. The lyricists are Anvita Dutt Guptan and Kumaar.
The music has been launched by Zee Music Company.
The first video track from SOTY 2 that released for public viewing was ‘The Jawaani Song’. It is a remix of the old song ‘Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani.’
The original song was a composition of RD Burman and sung by Kishore Kumar. It featured in the movie Jawani Diwani (1972).
Payal Dev and Vishal Dadlani have voiced the new remixed version of the song.
Kishore Kumar’s lilting voice has also been used in the remix.
A disclaimer stating that the remix is a tribute to the singer and composer comes at the beginning of the song.
The song appears to have been used for the Dignity Trophy ultimate dance competition where different teams are pitted against each other.
Though there seems to be no competition between Tiger’s dancing skills and others. The others seem like props trying to keep pace with Tiger’s grace on the dance floor.
Hollywood Star Will Smith in SOTY 2
Will Smith, the superstar actor from Hollywood, always wanted to feature in a Bollywood film. With SOTY 2, his bucket list has met with fruition.
Will visited India and shook a leg with the lead cast in the film. Remo D’Souza has choreographed that song.
The visit by Will was kept tight-lipped as no one knew until he actually landed on the sets. There was minimal security around the star.
During the entire shoot, Will was chilling out, greeting and giving high-fives to everyone.
The superstar rehearsed his dance steps for a day before the shoot. The sequence had ‘thumkas’ (jerks) and desi dance steps as Will did them with ease.
Will did not know the words of the song or the meaning of the occasion in the film. But he managed to keep his timing like a true professional.
The main dance sequence was followed by a spontaneous gig, which was also mastered by Will. And that too on the very first try.
After the shoot, a delighted Remo posted on Instagram:
“Can’t even say this was dream come true, coz I have never dreamt of working with my fav and one of the worlds best entertainer :))).

Smith also shared his on-set experience via photos on social media. He wrote on Instagram:
“On Set in Bollywood!! Shout out to the Cast & Crew of Student of the Year 2. Thanx for Letting Me Play.”

Overall SOTY 2 looks to be an out and out Tiger Shroff film.
If you are a fan of Tiger, his washboard abs, amazing stunts and surreal dancing skills, then you may take a trip to the theatres to watch SOTY 2.
Another plus factor is Punit Malhotra. His previous directorial ventures were quite watchable, with Punit doing a good job directing them.
If you have the time and money to spare, go and watch SOTY 2 at a theatre nearest to you.
The theatrical release of SOTY 2 has been postponed several times. It will now hit the cinema houses on May 10, 2019.
