Bangladeshi film Mastul has secured a nomination at the Imagine India International Film Festival, to be held in Madrid.
The festival’s 24th edition will take place from September 1 to 16, 2025, with films from around the world competing in various categories.
Directed by Mohammad Nuruzzaman, Mastul will contest in the prestigious ‘Life Award’ category.
This category highlights films with powerful social or human rights themes.
The film, which portrays the quiet resilience of sailors living and working at sea, was recently screened in Moscow.
There, it earned a special mention at the 47th Moscow International Film Festival.
Following its well-received premiere, Mastul has begun attracting global attention, now adding Spain to its growing list of accolades.
The director confirmed that he has received an official invitation to attend the Madrid festival.
He also expressed hope that travel arrangements will be finalised in time for the screening.
Ahead of its Spanish appearance, Mastul may be shown in select Bangladeshi venues.
Nuruzzaman stated that local screenings are being planned, but details remain in progress.
The story, which focuses on sailors and their relationship with the river and their vessels, highlights themes of struggle, camaraderie, and dignity.
Fazlur Rahman Babu leads the cast as a ship’s cook.
Deepak Suman, Aminur Rahman Mukul, Shikdar Mukit, Julfikar Chanchal, Sifat Bannya, and young actor Arif also play key roles.
Mastul is a Cinemakar production. Casting was led by Juboraj Shamim, known for his work in Adim.
The film’s cinematography was managed by Mohammad Arifuzzaman.
TongGhor Talkies has taken charge of the film’s digital distribution and international promotion.
In addition to directing and producing, Mohammad Nuruzzaman handled nearly every creative aspect of the film.
He wrote the screenplay, designed the sound, edited the footage, and developed the story himself.
His all-encompassing role reflects the indie spirit behind the project.
Festival organisers confirmed Mastul’s inclusion through an official post on the Imagine India website.
According to the release, over a hundred entries were submitted across various categories this year.
Among these, Mastul stood out for its humanist narrative and grounded storytelling.
The recognition marks another step forward for Bangladesh’s independent cinema movement.
Mastul continues to gain momentum on the international stage.
