The full cast has been announced for Diwali Story: The Journey of Ram – A Musical, coming to OVO Arena Wembley.
The large-scale Ramayana production will take place for one night only on September 27, 2026.
Kiran Kaanan will play Ram, with Bhavithra Gananathan portraying Sita. Aarya Singh will play Lakshman.
Pavan Maru takes on the roles of Dasharath and Hanuman, while Robin Ravi plays Raavan. Meanwhile, 16-year-old Dhrushil Vekaria will play Luv.
The company brings together established touring performers, drama-school graduates and actors making their professional stage debuts.
Several roles have been deliberately cast to create opportunities for performers without traditional conservatoire training.
They will perform alongside approximately 100 community actors and dancers drawn from communities for whom the Ramayana and Diwali remain living traditions.
Producer Nitin Palan MBE said: “From the beginning I wanted Diwali Story to do two things at once: give audiences the quality of a professional arena production, while creating a stage on which our wider community can genuinely participate.
“Last year’s Royal Albert Hall production showed us the appetite families have for seeing this story brought to life.
“Wembley isn’t that production moved into a bigger building – we are building on what began at the Royal Albert Hall and creating something new.”
Presented by Sanatan Events Ltd in partnership with The Palan Foundation and Golden Tours, the production opens inside a contemporary British family home.
As teenager Luv prepares for Diwali, he believes he already knows the Ramayana’s story.
His grandparents introduce him to a more complex world of princes, warriors, gods and demons.
The story explores exile, sacrifice and impossible choices through a central question about doing what is right.
Director and co-writer Samir Bhamra said: “Talent is all around us, and the combination of a professional and community cast gives us the opportunity to open doors and show South Asian ambition.
“The scale is exhilarating, but directing for an arena is more than making everything bigger – my challenge is finding intimacy inside a space holding thousands of people.
“I want the child sitting at the back of Wembley to feel as connected to Ram, Sita, Lakshman and Hanuman as the family in the front row.
“That means finding the human beings inside the epic.
“Ram is a son faced with an impossible decision. Sita’s courage is repeatedly tested. Lakshman’s loyalty has consequences. Raavan is brilliant, powerful and ultimately destroyed by the choices he makes.”
Diwali Story: The Journey of Ram – A Musical will feature new original music and songs by acclaimed Indian composer Rahul Ranade.
He will be joined by legendary playback singer and Padma Shri recipient Kavita Krishnamurthy.
Krishnamurthy’s career spans more than five decades and thousands of recordings across Indian languages.
Rahul Ranade said: “To work with an artist of Kavita Krishnamurthy’s stature is incredibly special.
“Her voice carries a musical history recognised across generations, and that is particularly meaningful for a production which is itself about stories and values travelling from one generation to the next.
“The ambition is for the music to work on an arena scale without losing the emotional detail of the story. Spectacle can fill a space, but a melody still has to reach one person at a time.”
The 2026 staging follows the sold-out Diwali Story production at the Royal Albert Hall in 2025.
That production was created from the Ramayana adaptation by Neelima Penumarthy and Ranuben Mehta-Radia.
For Wembley, Palan’s vision extends the story beyond Ram and Sita’s return to Ayodhya.
A new third act has been written by Palan, with support from Bhavini Sheth. It explores the five days of Diwali and how the Ramayana’s values continue through traditions practised by families today.
Bhamra has developed the material into a new theatrical framework for the arena.
A contemporary British family sits at the heart of this new approach to the production.
Bhavini Sheth, co-writer of Act Three, said: “Nitinbhai’s vision was that Goddess Lakshmi and the five days of Diwali should be better understood – why can’t every Hindu family remember Goddess Lakshmi and play the new song we have created every Diwali?
“So I explored prosperity as something deeper than material wealth: hope, courage, forgiveness, generosity and love.”
“My late Dadi embodied those values with quiet grace and was a great inspiration to me. I hope families leave inspired to carry that light into their own homes.”
Creative Directors and Choreographers Shruti Shah and Rohan Shah of Bollywood Dance School will lead the production’s movement language, working with both the professional company and community dancers throughout the arena production.
Alongside the show, they are also leading an education and participation programme with London schools.
The programme will culminate in a special pre-show performance at OVO Arena Wembley featuring participating schools.
Shruti Shah and Rohan Shah said: “The Ramayana contains enormous emotional contrasts: love and separation, celebration and grief, devotion, courage, doubt and ultimately homecoming.
“The opportunity is to give each of those worlds its own movement vocabulary while making sure the choreography and fight direction excite the whole arena.
“We have an extraordinary professional cast at the centre of the production, and working with over 100 community performers – some entrusted with key roles – shows that the Ramayana has always been carried from one generation to another.”
