Participants will learn how to build AI tools
Young people out of work or at risk of unemployment in the UK are to join “AI boot camps” designed to help them enter an increasingly technology-driven workplace.
A three-week pilot will teach participants how to build AI tools, understand workplace applications and use the technology responsibly.
It comes as concerns grow about AI’s potential impact on entry-level jobs, particularly for school leavers and graduates.
The government hopes the programme will help young people gain apprenticeships with businesses including BAE Systems and Heinz.
But can three weeks of training provide the ongoing learning needed to remain “AI-ready”?
Tackling Youth Unemployment

The pilot in north-west England will provide up to 70 people aged 16 to 21 with three weeks of AI training.
Participants will learn how to build AI tools and understand how businesses use the technology. They will also be taught about responsible AI use.
The programme will combine technical training with workplace skills, including using office IT systems and understanding the importance of timekeeping.
The government wants most participants to progress into apprenticeships with local businesses that have signed up to the scheme.
These include defence company BAE Systems and food manufacturer Heinz, providing participants with potential routes into employment after completing their training.
Lisa Nandy, the digital, culture, media and sport secretary, said the scheme would “support young people at a crucial juncture in their lives”.
The boot camp will use AI tools developed by US technology companies, including Microsoft, OpenAI and Anthropic.
The pilot is expected to help shape an England-wide AI skills programme, which is due to roll out in summer 2027.
The initiative comes as youth unemployment becomes an increasing concern across the UK.
Government data published in May showed 1.01 million people aged 16 to 24 were neither working nor learning.
It was the first time the number had exceeded 1 million since 2013, highlighting the scale of the challenge facing young people entering adulthood.
An interim report by former Labour minister Alan Milburn warned the figure could reach one in six by 2031.
The report also cautioned that Britain risked creating a “lost generation” of young people who are poorly prepared for work.
Andy Burnham has also committed to reducing the number of young people outside employment or education, although he has not set a target deadline.
Can 3 Weeks make Young People AI-Ready?

The government believes AI training could give young people an advantage as employers increasingly incorporate the technology into their workplaces.
UK AI minister Kanishka Narayan said the programme would give young people “the skills they need to thrive in the AI workplace”.
However, questions remain over whether a short training programme can prepare participants for a rapidly changing employment landscape.
Bouke Klein Teeselink, an academic at King’s College London and an expert on AI’s impact on work, described the boot camp as a “good idea in principle”.
He said: “What we need to do is make juniors more attractive to companies and one way to do that is make them more productive by teaching them how to do AI well.”
Teeselink nevertheless questioned whether three weeks would be sufficient to make teenagers “AI-ready”.
He argued that AI readiness requires continuous learning and regular updates as technology and workplace expectations change.
His concerns come as AI’s potential impact on entry-level employment receives increasing attention.
School leavers and graduates are particularly exposed because AI can increasingly perform the “grunt work” traditionally assigned to newcomers.
Industries including law, finance and marketing are among those facing concerns about how AI could reshape entry-level roles.
Stanford University recently highlighted declining employment among young workers in occupations exposed to AI, including software engineering and customer service.
The findings add to concerns that young people could face greater competition for jobs as employers adopt AI tools.
The UK government’s approach therefore seeks to address both sides of the challenge by teaching young people to use AI rather than simply compete against it.
The success of the pilot will depend on whether participants gain meaningful employment opportunities and develop skills that remain valuable beyond the initial training.
For young people already struggling to enter the workforce, that longer-term impact could prove more important than the technology itself.
AI boot camps could provide a useful introduction to the workplace, but three weeks alone cannot solve the UK’s youth employment crisis.
The government’s wider challenge will be ensuring young people receive continued training and genuine employment opportunities as AI transforms the jobs market.
If the pilot leads to apprenticeships and sustained employment, it could offer a practical model for helping young people navigate that transition.
However, its longer-term success will ultimately depend on whether the programme equips participants to keep learning as AI continues to evolve.
