"Our sponsors are no longer willing to wait."
Noted actress Moushumi is returning to audiences with her latest film Ordhangini, which is now set for a direct digital release.
The film will premiere on YouTube after its makers failed to secure theatrical releases in Bangladesh and the United States.
Directed by Syed R Saeed Emon, the project was originally developed with plans for cinema screenings in multiple regions.
However, prolonged political uncertainty and logistical hurdles gradually pushed the team toward an online release strategy instead.
Explaining the shift, Syed said: “We had planned to release the film in 2024. But after the July mass uprising and the ensuing political instability in Bangladesh, the release had to be postponed.”
He further shared that efforts to find screens abroad also proved unsuccessful, particularly in the United States market.
“We are also not getting theatres in the United States. Ramadan is approaching, and our sponsors are no longer willing to wait.”
As a result, the team decided to release Ordhangini directly on YouTube through the BDFilms USA channel.
The film is scheduled to premiere before Eid, aiming to reach a wider audience through digital accessibility.
Despite repeated attempts to engage local distributors in Bangladesh, the director confirmed that no positive responses were received.
Ordhangini is described as a social and family-oriented film that centres around Moushumi’s character and perspective.
The narrative reflects on changing meanings of relationships, evolving human struggles, and society’s emotional detachment during crises.
Shot across New York and New Jersey, the film was produced under challenging winter conditions that tested the cast’s endurance.
Syed recalled Moushumi’s commitment during filming, particularly while working outdoors in extreme cold weather conditions.
“She is not accustomed to US winters.
“She shot for eight hours on a hill in strong winds, wearing a sari, in minus 16 degrees Celsius. It still amazes me.”
The project initially began as a telefilm before being expanded into a full-length feature for theatrical consideration.
After additional scenes and post-production work, the final runtime of the film now stands at one hour and fifty-six minutes.
Alongside Moushumi, the film features several Bangladeshi expatriate artistes based in North America.
The supporting cast includes Toriqul Islam Mithu, Jolly Ahmed, Sarwar Premel, Sumit Chowdhury, and Nausheen Mridula, among others.
Additional performances come from Abul Hossain, Sohail Rana, Naeem Bhuiyan, Rehana Chowdhury Lea, Joy Chowdhury, and Mamun Rashid.
The film has been produced by Toriqul Islam Mithu, marking a collaborative effort within the expatriate creative community.
Music for Ordhangini has been arranged by Mehdi Hasan Tamjid, adding emotional depth to the film’s reflective themes.
With its digital release, the film now seeks to connect directly with audiences online.
