Anupam Kher’s new Hindi play Jaane Pehchaane Anjaane has launched its North American tour to a sold-out show in Houston.
The play opened on September 5, 2026, at the Stafford Centre in Houston, Texas, marking the beginning of an extensive multi-city tour.
The Texas run continued with a performance in Austin before heading to Dallas as part of the broader North American schedule.
Written and directed by Gajendra Ahire, the musical comedy-drama explores themes of loneliness, companionship and emotional distance in modern relationships.
The play also marks a significant and much-anticipated return to the stage for co-star Swaroop Sampat after a gap of nearly two decades.
She appears alongside an ensemble cast including Meghna Malik, Maya Sharma, Vikas Rawat, Shraddha Mandale and Herman D’Souza throughout the production.
Speaking after the Houston opening, Kher described live theatre as an immediate and unforgiving test of a story’s true emotional impact.
He said: “There is no retake and nowhere to hide on stage.
“You know immediately whether the story has reached people.”
He further said: “What made me happiest was that the audience laughed at the right places, grew quiet at the right places, and stayed with us through the emotional parts.”
His words reflected the relief and joy of connecting with an audience on such a deeply personal and immediate level.
Swaroop Sampat also shared her own reflections on returning to the stage and on what the Houston opening meant to her personally.
She said: “The story is very human. It is about people, their loneliness, and the things they don’t always say to each other.
“Performing it here and seeing the audience respond so openly was very satisfying.
“There were moments of complete silence in the auditorium, followed by thunderous applause.”
She also described returning to theatre alongside Kher as feeling like “coming home,” noting that the story’s themes resonate powerfully across different generations.
National promoter Rajender Singh also spoke about the significance of the Houston opening night and what it means for the rest of the tour.
He said: “The response from the Houston audience, from the continuous applause to the full-house standing ovation, was simply overwhelming.
“It gives us tremendous confidence as we take this production across the US and Canada.”
India’s Consul General in Houston, D.C. Manjunath, and several local community leaders were present for the prestigious and celebratory opening night performance.
Houston holds a special significance for Anupam Kher as it also served as the launchpad for his 2015 North American tour of Mera Woh Matlab Nahi Tha.
The production features the stage debut of veteran Bollywood composer Anu Malik, marking another significant milestone associated with this tour.
Lyrics for the play have been penned by Kausar Munir while vocals have been provided by celebrated singers Shaan, Sukhwinder Singh and Anandi Joshi.
The tour will next travel to Dallas before moving on to Vancouver, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Atlanta and Toronto across its scheduled run.
