"That Anupam was giving a very loud performance."

Veteran filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt recalled an occasion when Aamir Khan complained about Anupam Kher’s acting.

The incident happened during the filming of Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin (1991), which was Aamir’s first collaboration with Mahesh.

In the film, Aamir portrayed one of his most famous characters – the news reporter Raghu Jetley.

Meanwhile, Anupam played Seth Dharamchand, father to leading lady Pooja Dharamchand (Pooja Bhatt).

Mahesh and Anupam have shared a successful working relationship which has spanned several decades.

Mahesh Bhatt helmed Anupam’s debut Saraansh (1984). For his performance, Anupam won the 1985 Filmfare Award for ‘Best Actor’.

In an interview to celebrate the anniversary of Saraansh, Mahesh and Anupam delved into the incident which saw Aamir complain about his co-star.

Anupam began: “I came for the rehearsal on the first day.

“I was looking like Chunky Panday’s father, who was a very well-known doctor.

“My reference point was that this character is the world’s first dad who encourages his daughter to bail on her own wedding.

“But when Mr Aamir Khan did his first scene with me…”

Mahesh then said: “…He told me, ‘brother, that Anupam was giving a very loud performance’.

“And I felt that since a co-actor had brought this up, I should mention it to Anupam.

“He took me aside, and I said okay, and that character made the role what it was.”

However, Mahesh ultimately confirmed that in the end, he ignored Aamir’s comment.

Aamir Khan and Anupam Kher also shared the screen in Dil (1990) in which Anupam was the onscreen father to Aamir’s character.

After Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin, Mahesh Bhatt and Aamir went on to work together in Hum Hain Rahi Pyaar Ke (1993), for which Aamir co-wrote the screenplay.

They were supposed to work on a third film which was Ghulam (1998). However, Mahesh later abdicated as director, prompting Vikram Bhatt to take over.

Vikram Bhatt recently explained what led Mahesh to exit Ghulam. He said:

“Aamir told Mahesh, ‘Bhatt Sahab, I want Ghulam to be the most important thing in your life’.”

“Mahesh said that that was not possible.”

On the work front, Anupam Kher will be seen in Kangana Ranaut’s Emergencyas activist Jayaprakash Narayan.

Aamir Khan is currently busy with his productions Laapataa Ladies and Lahore, 1947.

He has also commenced the shooting of his next acting project Sitaare Zameen Par.

Mahesh Bhatt last directed Sadak 2 (2020). In his long career, he has helmed classics such as Naam (1986), Aashiqui (1990) and Zakhm (1998).
