Ahmedabad Police seized Rs. 1.5 Crore (£133,000) worth of fake currency notes that featured the image of Anupam Kher.
The news quickly went viral on social media, with many users expressing shock and others finding humour in the unusual situation.
The fake Rs. 500 notes, which displayed Kher’s image, also bore the name “Resole Bank Of India” instead of “Reserve Bank of India”.
Mehul Thakkar, the owner of a bullion firm in Ahmedabad, was approached by individuals interested in purchasing 2,100 grams of gold.
On September 24, 2024, Thakkar dispatched an employee to finalise the deal at a location on CG Road.
After delivering the gold, the con artists handed over 26 bundles of cash sealed with fake State Bank of India tape.
Upon inspecting the bundles, the employee discovered the notes were counterfeit.
But by the time he could react, the suspects had already fled the scene.
Inspector AA Desai reported that the suspects had set up a fraudulent courier service and assured the landlord of a legitimate rental agreement.
Investigations are ongoing, but no arrests have been made as of yet.
As the news of the scam circulated, Anupam Kher took to Instagram to address the situation.
In a humorous video, he expressed both surprise and amusement that his image had been utilised on fake currency notes.
He wrote: “My photo instead of Gandhi’s photo on the note of five hundred????

Earlier in September 2024, authorities had also busted a fake currency manufacturing unit operating from an online garment store in Surat.
Four individuals were arrested, with Deputy Commissioner of Police Rajdeep Nukum noting that the accused had been inspired by the series Farzi.
The Surat Special Operations Group conducted a raid on September 22, seizing counterfeit currency worth Rs. 1.20 lakh.
The accused had rented office space under the guise of an online garment business but were actually printing fake currency on the premises.
The SOG monitored the office closely before executing the raid when the suspects met to print more counterfeit notes.
On the work front, Anupam Kher is set to appear in Kangana Ranaut’s film Emergency.
Initially scheduled for release on September 6, 2024, the film faced delays due to ongoing issues with the censor board.
The board has stated that they would only grant certification if certain cuts were made. The producers requested time to consider their options.
