"Nobody can stop me from protecting this country."
The release date of Kangana Ranaut’s highly anticipated Emergency has been announced via a newly released teaser.
The actress will play former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. She has also produced and directed the film.
Emergency tells the story of Gandhi’s life, highlighting the adversary she faced when she announced the ‘Emergency’ period in India during the 1970s.
The film also stars Anupam Kher as activist Jayaprakash Narayan as well as Shreyas Talpade as politician Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
According to the teaser, the film is scheduled to be released worldwide on June 14, 2024.
In a story beginning in June 1975, the teaser opens with a melee of protesters throwing rocks at authorities.
Jayaprakash Narayan then narrates: “The darkest hour in India’s history has arrived.
“This is not a regime of a government. It is a regime of arrogance.
“This is the death of this country, not ours.
“This dictatorship must end.”
The teaser then cuts to a voiceover of Gandhi herself as she declares:
“Nobody can stop me from protecting this country. Because India is Indira, and Indira is India!”
Emergency was initially set to be released on November 24, 2023. However, Kangana confirmed that the release had been postponed.
Making an official statement, the Queen star said:
“Dear friends, I have an important announcement to make. Emergency movie is the culmination of my entire life’s learnings and earnings as an artist.
“Emergency is not just a film for me. It’s a test of my worth and character as an individual.
“Tremendous response that our teaser and other units got from everyone encouraged us all.
“My heart is full of gratitude and wherever I go, people ask me about Emergency‘s release date.”
“We have announced Emergency release date as November 24, 2023, but because of all the changes in my back to back releasing films calendar and over packed last quarter of 2024, we have decided to shift Emergency to next year (2024).
“New release date will be announced soon – please bear with us.
“Your anticipation, curiosity and excitement for the film means a lot.”
The film will also feature the late Satish Kaushik as the activist Jagjivan Ram.
It will mark Kaushik’s final film appearance after his death on March 9, 2023.
On the work front, Kangana was last seen in Tejas (2023).
A box office disaster, the film was subsequently released on ZEE5.
Emergency marks Kangana’s return to direction after Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi (2019).
