He urged the authorities to hold Kangana accountable.
The impending release of Kangana Ranaut’s Emergency has stirred a storm of controversy.
It has drawn sharp criticism from the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and the Akal Takht.
They have vehemently demanded an immediate ban on the movie.
Kangana has been accused of orchestrating a campaign to vilify Sikhs and propagate a negative narrative against them.
In a press conference held on June 21, 2024, SGPC chief Harjinder Singh Dhami condemned the film.
He called for legal action against Kangana Ranaut.
The SGPC chief highlighted a history of misrepresentations that have deeply wounded Sikh sentiments.
Dhami’s plea for a ban was accompanied by scathing criticism of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), which he labelled as “biased”.
He advocated for the inclusion of Sikh representatives within the censor board to ensure fair and accurate portrayals of the community.
Echoing these sentiments, Jathedar Gyani Raghbir Singh of the Akal Takht also denounced Emergency.
He branded it as a deliberate distortion of Sikh characters.
Accusing Kangana Ranaut of disrespecting and defaming the Sikh community, he specifically called out the portrayal of Jarnail Singh Khalsa Bhindranwale.
Singh underscored the community’s enduring memory of the tragic events of June 1984.
He emphasised that Kangana’s film allegedly tarnishes the legacy of Bhindranwale and the broader Sikh identity.
Singh expressed dismay at the government’s inaction despite Kangana’s repeated derogatory remarks towards Sikhs.
He urged the authorities to hold Kangana accountable for inciting religious sentiments through Emergency.
Kangana Ranaut’s Emergency has been a focal point of anticipation and controversy since its inception in 2021.
However, Kangana clarified that it does not fall under the genre of a biopic centred on the iconic figure of Indira Gandhi.
The versatile actress not only assumes the lead role in the movie but is also the director.
Joining Kangana in this star-studded ensemble are acclaimed actors including Mahima Chaudhry, Anupam Kher, Milind Soman, and Shreyas Talpade.
Each is poised to bring their depth and charisma to the narrative canvas of the film.
Shreyas is slated to embody the persona of the revered Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
Meanwhile, Anupam steps into the shoes of the eminent Jayaprakash Narayan.
The late Satish Kaushik portrays the former Deputy Prime Minister of India, Jagjivan Ram.
It marks his final film appearance after his death in March 2023.
Kangana Ranaut’s film is scheduled to be released on September 6, 2024.
