"We have the best prosthetics artist in the world"
Kangana Ranaut is gearing up for the release of Emergency and to immerse herself into the role as Indira Gandhi, she revealed she had prosthetic sessions for up to three hours.
Compelling history buffs to dust off their history books, the political drama promises to depict one of the most controversial chapters of Indian democracy – the Emergency of 1975 under Indira Gandhi’s premiership.
Despite the pivotal moment and the challenge of portraying the late PM, Kangana fully embraced the role.
Her transformation into the Iron Lady of India has sparked nationwide chatter, with her grey-haired, hooked nose and wrinkled jowls, leaving the public and critics intrigued.
Authenticity was non-negotiable for the actress.
Kangana nailed the look by working with Oscar-winning makeup artist David Malinowski, who was renowned for transforming Gary Oldman into Winston Churchill in The Darkest Hour.
In an industry frequently criticised for its focus on dynasty politics, Kangana Ranaut stands out by advocating for meritocracy, demonstrating that talent can prevail over lineage.
The trailer reveals Kangana’s remarkable likeness to Indira Gandhi, and her flawless portrayal of the former Prime Minister’s mannerisms has sparked conversations about her potential to secure a fifth National Award.
It appears that in the court of public opinion, Kangana has already achieved a resounding victory for her dedication to her craft.
While discussing her transformation, Kangana said:
“Prosthetics took two to three hours.
“We have the best prosthetics artist in the world – David (Malinowski), who transformed Gary Oldman into Winston Churchill for the film The Darkest Hour.
“He got an Oscar for his prosthetics. When you work with the best it shows in the result.”
Written and directed by Kangana, Emergency also stars Anupam Kher, Mahima Chaudhary, Milind Soman, Shreyas Talpade, Vishak Nair, and the late Satish Kaushik.
Produced by Zee Studios and Manikarnika Films, the film’s music is orchestrated by Sanchit Balhara and GV Prakash Kumar with screenplay and dialogues by Ritesh Shah.
Emergency has experienced numerous delays.
It was scheduled to be released on June 14, 2024.
However, due to the Indian Lok Sabha elections, the film was pushed back.
At the time, Manikarnika Films posted a statement announcing the news:
“Our hearts are filled with love pouring in for our queen Kangana Ranaut.
“As she prioritises her duty to the nation and her commitment to serve the country, the release date of our much-awaited film Emergency has been postponed.
“We promise to update you soon with a new release date.
“Thank you for your continued support.”
Emergency is now slated to be released on September 6, 2024.
