"India is Indira and Indira is India."

Kangana Ranaut’s upcoming film Emergency has had minds ticking ever since its announcements.

After several delays, the film’s trailer has finally been released.

In the film, Kangana plays Indira Gandhi who first served as the Indian Prime Minister from 1966 to 1977.

During her first tenure, Gandhi declared a state of emergency in India, triggering a barrage of hate towards her.

Kangana’s film largely focuses on this aspect of Gandhi’s leadership.

Indira Gandhi served as Prime Minister again from 1980 to 1984 when she was eventually assassinated by her bodyguards.

Kangana Ranaut, who has also directed the film, immerses herself into the character of Gandhi.

The trailer begins with a saree-clad Kangana entering the frame as Gandhi while a voiceover says:

“Please choose the government that will make powerful decisions for you.”

A character then tells Gandhi: “You used to learn from me but now you want to teach me.”

Later, Gandhi declares despondently: “A defeated person can never accept one’s victory.”

Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw (Milind Soman) then meets Gandhi.

She asks him: “Sam, are you with me in this?”

Manekshaw replies: “I am with India, Prime Minister.”

The trailer then cuts to a meeting with soldiers and Gandhi is told:

“You have effectively declared war on Pakistan. You should have rethought this decision.”

Gandhi says: ‘You have weaponry. We have courage. That’s all it takes.”

The Emergency trailer goes on to introduce Jayaprakash Narayan (Anupam Kher) who says:

“This is what happens when someone fights for power instead of the country.

“There is only one way to change total arrangements. Total revolution.”

After fast scenes of revolution and unrest, Gandhi says: “I am the Cabinet.”

Over more scenes of disorder involving police and violence, a voiceover questions:

“Who would have thought that democracy would be choked like this?”

A character tells Gandhi: “The entire country is going against you. An atmosphere of hate is created.”

Gandhi fires back: “Hate, hate and more hate – what else has this country given me?”

In the final scene of the Emergency trailer, Indira Gandhi declares: “India is Indira and Indira is India.”

The trailer attracted positive comments from viewers.

One viewer said: “Kangana Ranaut deserves praise for her dedication to Emergency.

“She thoroughly researched Indira Gandhi’s life and underwent a physical transformation.

“Her passion for storytelling, commitment to authenticity, and courage to take on complex roles make her a true artist.

“Her hard work will make the film memorable.”

Another fan commented: “After Sridevi, Kangana is the best actress we have currently. She is so natural and talented.”

At the trailer launch, Kangana delved into the obstacles she faced while making the film.

She said: “I have faced many obstacles while making this film which is common with every film.

“Every film faces a lot of obstacles and then they find many angels who support you through those obstacles.

“I want to say a special thanks to my cast. Everybody knows I have been boycotted by the film industry.

“It’s not easy to stand with me. It’s not easy to be part of my film and it’s definitely not easy to praise me.

“But, they have done all of it.

“This is mostly for people who are waiting to override this project with negativity.

“They will invest in PRs to malign the film. That’s our only concern.

“Our industry people can be extremely negative and vile, and attempt to sabotage films and ruin people’s careers.”

“So, we are just concerned about them, I openly speak in the Parliament.”

Emergency is Kangana’s second directorial after Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi (2019) which she took over after the original director, Krish Jagarlamudi, stepped down.

The film also stars Shreyas Talpade and Mahima Chaudhry.

It marks the final film appearance of Satish Kaushik who died in March 2023.

Emergency is scheduled to be released on September 6, 2024.
