"I am looking forward to playing the most iconic leader"
Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut has confirmed that she is playing former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in an upcoming political drama.
Sai Kabir, the film’s director, is also writing the script, which is near completion.
The period drama is said to be covering key moments in India’s political history, such as Operation Blue Star.
As well as Kangana Ranaut, the film is having actors who portray the likes of other prominent figures such as Sanjay Gandhi and Rajeev Gandhi.
The drama’s title is yet to be revealed.
Kangana shared the news on Twitter on Friday, January 29, 2021.

The actress wrote: “Happy to announce my dear friend Sai Kabir and I are collaborating on a political drama. Produced by Manikarnika Films. Written and Directed by Sai Kabir.”
In a statement released by her office, Kangana said:
“Yes, we are working on the project and the script is in its final stages.
“It is not the biopic of Indira Gandhi, it is a grand period film, to be precise a political drama that will help my generation to understand (the) socio-political landscape of current India.”
Kangana went on to say that many noteworthy actors will feature in the film.
“Many prominent actors will be part of this film and of course I am looking forward to playing the most iconic leader that we have had in the history of Indian politics.”
The actress was quick to praise the late Indira Gandhi, describing the former PM as “very beautiful”.
“Not pin up girl type beautiful, her face was like when all the swords are drawn just before the King’s command…-Khushwant Singh.”
This is not the first time Kangana Ranaut and director Sai Kabir have worked together. The actress stars in the 2014 crime drama Revolver Rani, also directed by Kabir.
Kangana recently finished filming Jayalalithaa biopic Thalaivi.
Now, the Bollywood beauty is taking on another film with a political background.
Ranaut often makes headlines for her performances in films, as well as her social media presence.
The access consistently claims that her films are a way of speaking her mind about political and social issues.
Kangana Ranaut is also starring in the upcoming film Tejas, which is due for release in 2021. The actress plays the lead role of an air force pilot.
She said: “I am honoured to be a part of a film that celebrates these brave men and women in uniform who make immense sacrifices in the line of duty every day.”
Kangana went on to say that she is “excited to take this journey” in a film that celebrates the Armed Forces.
