“So many reports that came up are similar to experiences I had"
Ritabhari Chakraborty has bravely stepped forward, shedding light on the sexual harassment that happens in the Malayalam film industry.
Ritabhari cited the revelations from the Hema Committee report, which revealed “rampant sexual harassment” in the Malayalam industry.
She drew on her own experiences.
In a candid post on Facebook, Ritabhari highlighted the distressing similarities between her experiences and those documented in the reports.
The actress also implored West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to launch an investigation.
Expressing her dismay, the actress questioned why the industry has not taken proactive measures to address such pervasive issues.
Ritabhari stated: “The Hema Commission report exposing the sexual assaults in the Malayalam film industry has left me thinking why is Bengali film industry not taking similar steps?
“So many reports that came up are similar to experiences I had or some actress I know did.”
She highlighted the plight of aspiring actresses who enter the industry with dreams.
They end up facing the harsh reality of exploitation.
She continued: “Do we have no responsibility towards the young actresses that come to the business with dreams and are made to believe this is nothing but a sugar-coated brothel?”
In her social media appeal, Ritabhari minced no words, condemning the abusers within the industry and demanding accountability.
She criticised the impunity enjoyed by certain individuals – be they actors, producers, or directors – who perpetrate vile acts while evading consequences.
“The hero/producer/directors with such filthy mind and behaviour continue to work without facing any consequences of their actions and even seen holding candles for the RG Kar victim as if they think of women as anything better than flesh.”
Calling for solidarity among fellow actresses, Ritabhari Chakraborty urged them to break their silence and unite against these predators.
She added:
“Let’s unmask these predators. I am calling my fellow actresses to stand against these monsters.”
“I know you are scared of losing your part or never been cast as most of these men are influential.
“But how long do we stay quiet?
“No, we don’t want another case of rape or assault before we are finally taken seriously. Being in show business does we are finally taken seriously.
“Being in show business does not give the right to any man to look at us as a commodity or their targets to satisfy their thirst for power or sex.”
