"I should have made a better film."

Anubhav Sinha has claimed that he failed Shah Rukh Khan with Ra One (2011).

Ra One was a superhero science-fiction film that starred SRK (Shekhar Subramaniam/G One).

Shekhar is a game designer who creates a virtual game in which the villain never dies.

His young son Prateek Subramaniam (Armaan Verma) plays the game. A series of events leads to the villain, Ra One (Arjun Rampal), coming into the real world looking for him.

The film also starred Kareena Kapoor Khan (Sonia S Subramaniam).

Sonia and Prateek are looked after by superhero G One after Shekhar is killed by Ra One.

Despite having such an intriguing premise, Ra One failed to live up to many expectations.

It also received a polarising response from critics.

Director Anubhav Sinha opened up about the mixed reaction the film received.

The filmmaker felt he failed SRK and shared his thoughts about a possible sequel.

He said: “I think I failed Shah Rukh Khan. I did not make a good enough film but it was such a great opportunity.

“I should have made a better film.

“[A sequel] is a very presumptuous thought. Such big films happen, you don’t plan them.

“When I thought of Ra One, I had just delivered the biggest flop of my career thus far, Cash, and I thought of that film and it happened, which is quite surprising to say the least.”

On a previous occasion, Anubhav shared his disappointment at Shah Rukh’s comment when the actor called Ra One a flop.

The filmmaker said: “My heart was broken. I thought to myself, ‘How could Shah Rukh say this’?

“He was hurt, that’s probably why he said what he said.

“I was hurt by what he said, but I was young then.”

While the film itself was a disappointment, its music was well-received.

The song ‘Chammak Challo‘ was a chartbuster and continues to remain popular.

Anubhav delved into the appreciation the film garnered since its release. He said:

“I am a big believer of how long a film lives determines its legacy.

“The fact that a film that was so harshly judged and criticised 12 years back lives on online with people calling it ahead of its time speaks volumes.

“Then, that is the film’s success and it gives me a lot of happiness.”

On the work front, Anubhav Sinha is currently working on Ek Superhero.

Meanwhile, SRK will be seen in a cameo role in Tiger 3, reprising his role from Pathaan (2023).

His next solo release is Rajkumar Hirani’s Dunki. The film is scheduled to be released on December 22, 2023, in India.

It will be released a day earlier in overseas territories.
