"How do you propose to stay abroad?"

The trailer for Shah Rukh Khan’s Dunki has been released and it presents a unique tale of friendship, determination and overcoming obstacles.

Dunki is said to be based on the ‘Donkey Technique’, an unlawful backdoor entry to richer countries.

In a story beginning in 1995, the trailer opens with Hardayal ‘Hardy’ Singh Dhillon (Shah Rukh Khan) arriving in Laltu.

In the voiceover, Hardy narrates how he met four friends in the city, who were “desperate” to go to London.

These four companions comprise of Balli (Anil Grover), a barber and Buggu Lakhanpal (Vikram Kochhar), a pyjama-seller.

Also in the group is Sukhi (Vicky Kaushal) who eagerly learns English.

The group is completed by Manu (Taapsee Pannu), Hardy’s love interest.

Describing Manu, Hardy says: “She takes on the whole world for me. No one has ever stood up for me.”

The trailer then cuts to the fun-filled dance number ‘Lutt Putt Gaya‘.

Soon after, a British man asks Sukhi: “If you have no vocabulary, how do you propose to stay abroad?”

When the question is translated for him, Sukhi points at the man.

He sharply replies: “He doesn’t live in Punjab! Does he know Punjabi?”

In the following scene, Hardy declares: “The British ruled us for a century.

“When they arrived, we didn’t ask them, ‘Do you know Hindi?’

“When we didn’t stop them, who are they to stop us?”

This suggests that Dunki advocates for defending one’s heritage and being proud of language, culture and home.

After a series of fast cuts depicting flying bullets, adrenaline-pumping chases and Hardy being led away in handcuffs, Hardy narrates:

“A desperate need forces one to leave home.

“Why else would one leave their country, family and friends to take bullets at the borders?

“I started this story. So, I will finish it, 25 years later.”

Dunki also stars Boman Irani as the English teacher, Gulati.

The trailer received positive responses from the audience. A South Indian viewer commented:

“As a South Indian, this is the type of movie I like in Bollywood which is closer to the reality and not any showoff movies.

“This is what makes Bollywood one of the best.”

Another enthused: “Counting down the days until Dunki hits the screens!

“The combo of SRK and Rajkumar Hirani is already a blockbuster in my mind!”

Dunki is directed by Rajkumar Hirani, who has previously helmed hits such as Lage Raho Munnabhai (2006), 3 Idiots (2009) and PK (2014).

Rajkumar’s last film was Sanju (2018), starring Ranbir Kapoor.

Audiences have clearly missed Rajkumar’s cinema, which is known for conveying social messages through lenses of humour and emotion.

A viewer said: “That Rajkumar Hirani magic is what we missed all these years and this time the magic is 100X due to the presence of King Khan.”

It has been a stellar 2023 for SRK with unparalleled success and highest-grossing blockbusters in the form of Pathaan and Jawan.

Here’s hoping that Dunki will create a hat-trick for the star as he rides the crest of a hugely successful wave.

Dunki is scheduled to be released worldwide on December 21, 2023.
