"I have no memories of him."
Tabu recently made headlines when she spoke about her father.
On an episode of the popular talk show Rendevous with Simi Garewal, Tabu revealed that her father is Pakistani actor Jamal Hashmi and highlighted their relationship.
Revealing why she does not use his surname, Tabu said:
“I never really use it, I never thought it was important for me to use my father’s surname, it was always Tabassum Fatima, which was my middle name.
“In school, Fatima was my surname. I have no memories of him. My sister has met him on occasion but I have never really felt like meeting him.
“I am not curious about him, I am happy the way I am, the way I have grown up. I am very settled in my own life.”
Jamal Hashmi was a prominent Pakistani actor in the 1970s and made a name in the film industry when he starred in Sazaa, which was produced and directed by Ali Afnan Siddiqui.
After his successful run, Jamal changed his name to Jameel Hashmi, married a woman named Rizwana, who is an acquaintance of Shabana Azmi, and the pair settled in Lahore.
After facing trials and tribulations, Jamal left the showbiz industry and moved back to India with his wife.
The couple went on to have two daughters, Tabu and Farah Naaz.
Shortly after the birth of his daughters, Jamal divorced his wife and left his family when Tabu was just three years old.
It is reported that although Farah was in regular contact with her father, it was a different story for Tabu.
This is because Jamal was against his daughters working in the showbiz industry, so there was no relationship.
It is believed that Farah had requested her father to take her to his home but he had refused since he had remarried and had two more daughters.
Tabu is considered to be one of the most powerful actresses in Bollywood and is hugely recognised for her script choices which often touch on hard-hitting subjects such as prostitution and surrogacy.
She has starred in movies such as Chandni Bar, Cheeni Kum, Virasat, Filhal and Hum Saath Saath Hain.
Tabu has won several awards for her contribution to Indian cinema, including multiple Filmfare Awards, Critics Awards for Best Actress as well as the National Film Awards.
Tabu is also the recipient of the Padma Shri Award which is considered to be the fourth highest civilian honour.
