“Strong, intelligent, and alluring"
Tabu will venture into Hollywood as she has been cast in the series Dune: Prophecy.
Created for the streaming service Max, Tabu will play a recurring role.
The series was originally commissioned in 2019 under the title Dune: The Sisterhood.
It will be an adaptation of the 2012 novel Sisterhood of Dune, which was written by Brian Herbert and Kevin J Anderson.
The series serves as a prequel to 2021’s Dune, which stars Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya.
The official logline states: “Set within the expansive universe of Dune, created by acclaimed author Frank Herbert, and 10,000 years before the ascension of Paul Atreides, Dune: Prophecy follows two Harkonnen sisters as they combat forces that threaten the future of humankind, and establish the fabled sect that will become known as the Bene Gesserit.”
The Bene Gesserit are an exclusive and powerful sisterhood who undergo intense physical training and mental conditioning to obtain superhuman abilities.
Tabu will play Sister Francesca.
Sister Francesca is described as:
“Strong, intelligent, and alluring, Sister Francesca leaves a lasting impression in her wake.
“Once a great love of the Emperor, her return to the palace strains the balance of power in the capital.”
Dune: Prophecy will also star Emily Watson, Olivia Williams, Travis Fimmel, Johdi May, Mark Strong, Sarah-Sofie Boussnina, Josh Heuston, Chloe Lea, Jade Anouka, Faoileann Cunningham, Edward Davis, Aoife Hinds, Chris Mason and Shalom Brune-Franklin.
The series has had a long road to the screen, including multiple showrunner changes and a creative reset in 2023.
Despite this, it is scheduled to premiere in late 2024.
This is not the first international project Tabu has worked on.
She made her international debut in 1998 with the French-Indian film Hanuman.
She portrayed the role of Anja in the English language film while actor Nithya Menen, who made her debut as a child artist, played Tabu’s younger sister.
Tabu then took the world by storm in Mira Nair’s directorial The Namesake, based on Jhumpa Lahiri’s book of the same name.
She won hearts and received critical acclaim for her portrayal of Irrfan Khan’s onscreen wife and Kal Penn’s mother, Ashima Ganguli.
Tabu had limited screen time in Life of Pi but her role was an impactful one.
Tabu reunited with Mira Nair in the 2020 TV miniseries A Suitable Boy.
Playing courtesan Saeeda Bai, Tabu mesmerised the audience.
Her onscreen chemistry with Ishaan Khatter was one of the show’s highlights.
