"We had sex more when I was here on holiday than when I was living here."
A British woman left the UK for her Sri Lankan lover after a whirlwind holiday romance. However, it soon turned into a nightmare as her husband lost interest in her and his subsequent death in May 2017.
Now she can no longer return to the UK due to her financial situation.
59-year-old Diane De Zoysa met 26-year-old Priyanjana, a hotel worker, during her visit to the country in 2011. Their holiday romance quickly developed into marriage, as Diane described her Sri Lankan lover as passionate.
She even sold her home in Edinburgh and quit her job as a council worker to live with Priyanjana in Sri Lanka. She moved to the country permanently in 2015. The British woman also gave the 26-year-old £100,000, which came from selling her property.
But the marriage quickly soured as Priyanjana lost his interest in Diane. The 59-year-old explained: “We had sex more when I was here on holiday than when I was living here. After I moved here we didn’t do it very often, only nine times last year and once this year.”
She went on to reveal that Priyanjana would often leave her alone at their house. This behaviour has led her to believe he had a second marriage in secret.
In addition, the Sri Lankan lover had become short-tempered and would go into rages: “The last few months were very hard as we argued all the time and he would get angry and smash things,” Diane says.
“It was quite volatile towards the end. I wanted to leave him but I had nowhere to go and no money.” Now, she believes that her husband had only married her for money.
However, in an unexpected turn, her Sri Lankan lover was murdered at a friend’s house in May 2017. He had been shot and later died. Diane claims his murder was linked to a blackmail plot, saying:
“His friend told me they were jealous because he was rich. They were jealous because he had a nice house, a minibus and a tuk-tuk.
“They blackmailed him. He did give them some money but they wanted more. Because they didn’t give him more, they shot him. They must have gone looking for him.” However, the police have not verified these claims.
So far, they have reportedly caught two men in connection with the murder.
After a nightmarish marriage, Diane has revealed she now “regrets” her holiday romance. Due to her financial situation, she cannot return to the UK as she claims Priyanjana’s family want to keep the £100,000.
She currently is in contact with the British Consulate in Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka, and hopes to establish her rights. In time, the 59-year-old will hopefully receive help in returning back to the UK.
