he rejected her, leaving her stranded.
A US woman’s pursuit of love took a devastating turn when her 19-year-old Pakistani boyfriend left her stranded upon her arrival in Karachi.
The heartbreaking ordeal of 33-year-old Onia Andrew Abson has garnered significant attention.
Many have criticised the young man’s actions and the effect on Pakistan’s international image.
Onia’s story began with an online romance with Nidal Ahmed Memon, a teenager from Karachi’s Garden East neighbourhood.
Captivated by his promises of marriage, she made the life-altering decision to leave her husband and two children, and travel to Pakistan.
She flew to Karachi, where she hoped to start a new chapter in her life.
However, upon arriving in Pakistan, her hopes were crushed.
Pressured by his family’s disapproval of their significant age difference, he rejected her, leaving her stranded in the country.
Without money, accommodation, or a valid visa, Onia was left alone and devastated at Jinnah International Airport for seven days.
Her plight came to light when Sindh Governor Kamran Khan Tessori encountered a crowd surrounding her at the airport.
Distressed and desperate, Onia shared her story with the governor, who immediately stepped in to assist.
Governor Tessori arranged for her return to the United States, ensuring her safe departure from Pakistan.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage on social media, with many criticising Nidal for his fraudulent behaviour.
Netizens have also expressed sympathy for the US woman, who made immense sacrifices for a relationship that ultimately left her in emotional and financial ruin.
A user said: “Show his face to the world as well! Let that be a lesson to him after doing this to this poor lady.”
Another wrote: “I saw her at the airport last Friday. I thought she was just a passenger. This is sooo bad.”
One said:
“He played with her life, just like that. He shouldn’t have made big promises if he couldn’t take a stand.”
Some have called for greater awareness and caution when engaging in online romances, particularly those involving significant cultural and geographical divides.
One commented: “This is quite common nowadays, young Pakistani boys are approaching the USA nationals to grab a green card and US nationality.”
This case is one of many that underline the risks of virtual relationships escalating into real-world consequences.
While online connections often bring people together, they can also lead to unexpected challenges and heartbreak, as illustrated by Onia’s unfortunate experience.
