An Indian woman has been arrested for the attempted murder of her fiance.

The incident occurred at a temple in Andhra Pradesh on April 18, 2022.

It was reported that she slit her fiance’s throat just over a month before their arranged marriage because she did not want to marry him.

Twenty-two-year-old Viyyapu Pushpa was engaged to Addepalli Ram Naidu through an arranged marriage agreement between their families.

They were set to marry on May 29, 2022.

On the day of the attack, Viyyapu persuaded her fiance to go with her to an isolated hilltop.

When they reached the hilltop, Viyyapu told Addepalli that she wanted to give him a surprise before asking him to close his eyes.

His hesitation prompted Viyyapu to use her scarf as a blindfold.

Suddenly, she brandished a knife and slashed his throat. Addepalli managed to call an ambulance.

The Indian woman then panicked and fled.

Meanwhile, Addepalli lost consciousness due to blood loss. An onlooker took him to hospital.

Addepalli received 30 stitches and is currently recovering.

From his hospital bed, he told reporters that their parents had arranged their marriage.

He explained after being knifed, he took off the blindfold. At that point, Viyyapu told him that she did not want to get married.

An attempted murder charge was filed against Viyyapu and she was subsequently arrested. The weapon was also recovered.

She initially told officers that it was an accident. Viyyapu later admitted to the crime.

Viyyapu explained that she did not want to get married and resorted to violence as she thought it would be a way out of her arranged marriage.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Sunil Kumar said:

“According to her statement, she just didn’t want to get married to this guy or anyone else.”

He went on to say that while the Indian woman was not pressured to marry Addepallu, however, she was scared to tell anyone that she did not want to get married.

Therefore, she did not think about the consequences of her “immature” actions.

Meanwhile, the victim’s parents stated that if she was not interested, she should have told them.

Both sets of parents are blaming each other for the incident.

DSP Kumar added: “Her parents say she is innocent, while the man’s parents are demanding justice.”
