"I really like you but I want to keep it open."
Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone has revealed that she initially wanted to keep her relationship with Ranveer Singh “open” as she did not want to “commit”.
Today, Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone are one of Bollywood’s favourite couples as they continue to set major couple goals for their fans.
The couple started dating during the filming of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film, Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela (2013).
Despite not confirming their relationship until 2018, Ranveer and Deepika were spotted showering their love for each other.
Their relationship is something many people aspire to have. However, what many people do not know is that Deepika wanted a casual relationship with Ranveer.
Speaking to Filmfare in 2018, Deepika disclosed the details of the early days in their relationship. She said:
“It was not about him. It was about whether I was ready to commit to a relationship.
“Because I’d been in several relationships before and many times my trust was broken. When I met Ranveer, I was exhausted.
“I had been constantly in and out of relationships. I just wanted to be alone for some time. I’ve never casually dated anyone. I’ve been in relationships since I was 13.”
The couple met back in 2012 after Deepika had recently gotten out of a relationship. She did not want her heart broken again. Deepika explained:
“When this relationship, which I was in, ended in 2012, I was like I’m done. I wanted to try out this concept of casual dating.
“I just did not want to be answerable to anyone. When Ranveer and I met in 2012, I told him, ‘I realise there’s a connection between us. I really like you but I want to keep it open. I don’t want to commit. If I get attracted to different people I’m going to do my thing.’”
However, soon Deepika was emotionally invested in Ranveer and only had eyes for him. She said:
“But nothing happened. I couldn’t get myself to do any of that. At the same time, I did not emotionally invest in this relationship.
“But now when I look back, six months into it I was pretty much emotionally invested in us.
“After that, it was when do we get married? I was never unsure about him.”
Ranveer and Deepika were in a relationship for six years while being engaged for four years.
The loved-up couple tied the knot in November 2018 in Italy in two beautiful intimate ceremonies away from the media.
These included a traditional Konkani-style wedding followed by an Anand Karaj.
Currently, the couple is isolating indoors due to the coronavirus lockdown. They have been sharing glimpses from their quarantine diaries on Instagram.
