A North Carolina assistant teacher has been charged with felony assault after allegedly attacking her husband with a knife during an argument at their home.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police identified the suspect as Chandraprabha Singh, who works at Endhaven Elementary School.

According to the police report, officers were called to an apartment complex on Foxhaven Drive on October 12 after receiving a report of an assault with a deadly weapon.

When police arrived, Singh’s husband, Arvind Singh, had already been taken to hospital with a serious neck injury. The incident reportedly occurred while Singh was cooking breakfast.

According to police, Singh told officers she was preparing food when her husband offered to help. She said she became upset because he had not cleaned the house.

Singh claimed she turned around with a knife in her hand and accidentally sliced her husband in the neck.

However, Arvind Singh told officers at the hospital that his wife “was frustrated and purposely attacked him with the knife”.

He reportedly told 911 dispatchers the argument turned violent because he had not cleaned the house.

The arrest warrant states Singh “unlawfully, willfully, feloniously” cut another person, resulting in serious injury. She was charged with assault with a deadly weapon, inflicting serious injury.

Singh was initially denied bond by a magistrate but later had her bond approved at $10,000 during a court appearance on October 13.

She was also appointed a public defender at that time.

After posting bond, Singh was released from jail and ordered to wear an electronic monitoring device. The court also ordered her to have no contact with her husband.

Police confirmed the assault did not occur on school property and did not involve any students, teachers, or staff.

Singh joined Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools as a lunchroom assistant on October 4, 2023, before being promoted to assistant teacher for grades K-3 in August 2024.

The school district said Singh has been suspended with pay pending the outcome of the investigation.

Police were called to the scene at around 10:49 am on October 12. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) said investigations remain ongoing, with officers reviewing statements from both Singh and her husband to determine what led to the attack.

Singh’s next court appearance is scheduled for October 30.
