police grew suspicious of his wife's claims
An Indian wife and her lover have been arrested for killing her husband and blaming his death on Covid-19.
Twenty-seven-year-old Manohar Namdeo Hande, a civil engineer, died on May 24, 2021 at his house in Uruli Devachi in Pune.
His wife, 19-year-old Ashwini, told the police that he tested positive for Covid-19 and died from it.
However, police later found that Ashwini, along with her lover Gaurav Sutar, had murdered Hande and covered it up.
It was discovered that the pair smothered and strangled Hande to death after sedating him with sleeping pills.
Police arrested Sutar on June 5, 2021, and Ashwini on June 6, 2021.
Speaking of the case, Senior Inspector Rajendra Mokashi said:
“Following the death, we launched a probe into its causes and sequence of events leading to it.
“The wife of the deceased told us that her husband had tested Covid-positive.
“While the test report came negative, we found that the man had, in fact, tested positive earlier but recovered.
“Because of various suspicious aspects, we kept a close watch and continued our probe in various angles.”
Inspector Subhash Kale, the investigating officer, added:
“The preliminary findings of the autopsy were inconclusive and the viscera was preserved for chemical analysis.
“One of the teams also started looking into the call records of Ashwini and those she was in touch with.
“The calls and their location details revealed that man, identified as Gaurav Sutar, had come to the couple’s house the night preceding the day Hande died.
“The probe revealed that Ashwini and Sutar were in a relationship and they allegedly killed Hande because of it and said he had died because of Covid.”
Hande’s autopsy showed that he had previously tested positive for Covid-19 but recovered from it.
Therefore, the police grew suspicious of his wife’s claims that he died of the virus.
The probe eventually found that Gourav Sutar gave Ashwini some sleeping pills the night before Manohar Namdeo Hande died.
Ashwini mixed them into a glass of milk and gave it to her husband to drink.
After sedating him, both Ashwini and Sutar strangled Hande to death and claimed the cause to be Covid-19.
According to Inspector Subhash Kale, Ashwini and Sutar appeared before a court in Pune on Sunday, June 6, 2021.
They were remanded in police custody until Friday, June 11, 2021.
