2019 is shaping up to be an exciting year for the revival of Pakistan cinema, especially with some great upcoming Pakistani films releasing.

From 2018 Pakistani movies have come a long way, particularly with the quality of production and content.

The year 2018 saw cinema houses full, with blockbusters such as Cake, Teefa in Trouble, Parwaaz Hai Junoon, Jawani Phir Nahin Ani 2 and Load Wedding.

Film fans are also witnessing a new wave of faces in acting and direction.

For 2019, already there has been an announcement of some big ventures, which includes The Legend of Maula Jatt.

Many of the films coming out in 2019 feature top stars such as Fawad Khan, Mahira Khan and Shaan Shahid.

Sherdil

Director: Azfar Jafri
Starring: Armeena Rana Khan, Mikaal Zulfikar, Sabeeka Imam

Sherdil is an upcoming Pakistani film that revolves around the Pakistan Air Force (PAF). This is the second movie with a PAF theme after Parwaaz Hai Junoon (2018).

The film depicts the story of Mikaal Zulifkar who plays a pilot, reflecting the time of the 1965 war.

Armeena Rana Khan is the lead female in the film, which will portray women in a powerful light.

Sabeeka Imam, Laila Zuberi and Hassan Niaz are also part of this film.

Educationist and aviation specialist Noman Khan and the late Junaid Jamshed came up with the concept for this film in 2017.

Noman is the writer and producer of Sherdil, a film which had approval from PAF in 2017.

This is Jafri’s fourth venture as a director, with his last being Parchi (2018).

Releasing on March 22, 2019, Sherdil will have screenings in almost forty different countries across various languages.

The Legend of Maula Jatt

The Legend of Maula Jatt wows with Sublime Trailer - romance

Director: Bilal Lashari
Starring: Fawad Khan, Mahira Khan, Humaima Malick, Gohar Rasheed

The Legend of Maula Jatt tops the list of upcoming Pakistani films in 2019. Since the announcement, the film is creating a big buzz, not only in Pakistan but also in India.

This action-thrilling movie is not a remake of the hyper-action movie Maula Jatt (1979).

However, the key similarity between the two is highlighting of the ‘gandasa’ (iconic weaponry bladed stick) culture and rivalry.

The film stars Pakistani heartthrob, Fawad Khan as Maula Jutt and Hamza Ali Abbasi as Noori Nutt.

Mahira Khan playing Mukkho Jatti is the lead actress in the film. Humaima Malick who portrays the character of Daaro Nattni is the other actress in the film.

Gohar Rasheed who came late into the fold takes on the role of Maakha Jatt. Veteran actors Shafqat Cheema and Nayyer Ejaz will have villainous characters.

Under the direction of Bilal Lashari, The Legend of Maula Jatt releases on Eid 2019.

No doubt, The Legend of Maula Jatt will be a game changer for Lollywood.

Karachi Se Lahore 3

Director: Wajahat Rauf
Starring: Yasir Hussain, Shahzad Shaikh, Ayesha Omer, 

Wajahat Rauf is the director of the upcoming Pakistani movie Karachi Se Lahore 3.

Rauf also gave direction to the first instalment of this series, Karachi Se Lahore (2015), which was a box office hit.

The main cast includes Yasir Hussain as Mutazalzal, Shahzad Shaikh as Ayaz Vali Khan and Ayesha Omar as Maryam.

The writer of the movie Yasir Hussain and director Wajahat Rauf made the announcement for the third part of Karachi Se Lahore in August 2018.

Unlike the first the two movies, the third will not focus on a road trip. Filmmakers will present something unique this time around.

KSL3 is stirring up a lot of hype and is set to release in June 2019.

Wrong Number 2

Director: Yasir Nawaz
Starring: Sami Khan, Neelam Munir, Javed Sheikh, Mehmood Aslam

Following the success of Wrong No (2015), director Yasir Nawaz did announce Wrong Number 2, the second instalment of the super-hit romantic comedy.

Actors Sami Khan and Neelam Muneer feature in lead roles.

Khan and Nawaz have previously worked in the hit play Khudgharz (2017).

Having proven on TV, the director-actor duo will definitely charm the viewers with this cinematic venture.

Muneer who made her debut alongside Ahsan Khan in Chupan Chupai (2017) is a good choice for this instalment.

The cast also stars veteran actors Javed Sheikh, Mehmood Aslam and Nayyar Ejaz, along with Yasir’s younger brother Danish Nawaz.

Wrong Number 2 will release around June 2019.

Love You Jatta

Director: Nadeem Baig
Starring: Humayun Saeed

Pakistan film and TV icon Humayun Saeed will play the main role in the upcoming Pakistani movie, Love You Jatta.

Love you Jatta will be a rom-com, which is written by the gifted actor, host and writer, Vasay Chaudhry.

The leading lady’s name is being kept under wraps but as per rumours, it is going to be a well-known name in the industry.

With several names doing the rounds, it will be interesting to see who plays Saeed’s Jattni.

Besides shooting in Pakistan the movie will be comprehensively shot in the UK.

Nadeem Baig of Main Hoon Shahid Afridi (2013) fame is the director of the film.

The movie plans to release for Eid in August 2019.

Paray Hut Love

Director: Asim Raza
Starring: Sheheryar Munawar, Maya Ali

Asim Raza directs his next film, Paray Hut Love. He previously directed the urban style film Ho Mann Jahaan starring Mahira Khan, Adeel Husain and Sheheryar Munawar.

Apparently, Mahira was the first choice for Paray Hut Love. But later Maya Ali came in to replace her.

Besides Ali, Sheheryar Munawar is playing the lead hero role in this upcoming Pakistani film.

Zara Noor Abbas aka Arsala from the popular serial Khamoshi (2017) makes her silver screen debut with this romantic modern age Pakistani movie.

Speaking about the film, Raza says:

“Parey Hat Luv is a contemporary romantic comedy primarily set in Pakistan and Europe.”

“The basic premise of the film is an unlikely romance between a young free-willed, commitment-phobic man and a beautiful, strong-willed woman as they happen to meet and fall in love over a series of unplanned encounters.”

The seasoned Imran Aslam is the writer of this film, which promises to take the audience on a two-hour voyage filled with love, emotions and much more.

Paray Hut Love is slated for an Eid release in August 2019.

Zarrar

10 Upcoming Pakistani Films Releasing in 2019 - Zarrar

Director: Shaan Shahid
Starring: Shaan Shahid, Kiran Malik, Adnan Butt, Nadeem Malik

The upcoming Pakistani movie Zarrar is a fast-paced action thriller that is about the life of a spy and intelligence agencies from Pakistan.

Shaan Shahid, a precious star from Pakistan is the director and writer of the film.

Kiran Malik, Adnan Butt and Nadeem Malik will have vital roles in the film.

For the first time, Timothy Hallam Wood from the UK will be the Director of Photography (DoP) for a Lollywood film.

Pinewood, UK’s biggest studio will manage the post-production of Zarrar.

Shan put out a tweet about the film, indicating the release time of the film. He tweeted:

“This Independence Day we take an oath to protect and to serve the land of the pure # zarrar.”

Coinciding with Pakistan’s independence day and Eid, the film releases in August 2019.

Superstar

Director: Mohammed Ehtishamuddin
Starring: Mahira Khan, Bilal Ashraf

Producer Momina Duraid reveals her new upcoming Pakistani movie Superstar, featuring gorgeous Mahira Khan and handsome Bilal Ashraf.

Bilal who did not have the best start to his film career will pair with Mahira.

According to Duraid, Ashraf suits the role, despite Yalghaar (2017) and Rangreza (2018) not doing so well.

When asked about what Superstar revolves, Momina told the media:

“It’s about the world of superstars in Pakistan… very relatable.

“We all have our own definitions of the term ‘superstar’. There’s a fine line between being a superstar and loving the craft, so the truth behind it is also something we’ve tried to tackle.”

The music composers of the film are Azaan Sami Khan and Atif Aslam, who have already completed two songs for the movie’s Original Sound Track (OST).

Azaan has also written the screenplay of the film. Commenting on Azaan and the topic, Duraid adds:

“It’s been a year since he came to me with Superstar and that’s when we started discussing it.

“I instantly loved it when I heard the one-liners.”

“It’s a genre that hasn’t been made in Pakistan yet, very theatrical and something I had been wanting to do for a while.”

Mohammed Ehtishamuddin of Udaari (2016) fame is the director of the film.

Durj

10 Upcoming Pakistani Films Releasing in 2019 - Durj

Director: Shamoon Abbasi
Starring: Shamoon Abbasi, Sherry Shah

Under the direction of Shamoon Abbasi the upcoming Pakistani movie, Durj is based on three real-life horrific incidents that happened in the country.

Abbasi is the writer and director of Durj. He also stars in a lead role alongside gorgeous actress Sherry Shah.

Shah was so passionate about her role that she even shaved her head and put on 40 pounds for the film.

The movie revolves around a Pakistani cannibal (Shamoon Abbasi) who survives in a desert with his love interest (Sherry Shah).

Besides Abbasi and Shah, the film also features Dodi Khan, Maira Khan and Nouman Javaid.

Several posters and teasers for the film have released, with audiences giving the thumbs up.

This somewhat disturbing film is certainly not for the faint-hearted.

Baaji

10 Upcoming Pakistani Films Releasing in 2019 - baaji

Director: Saqib Malik
Starring: Meera, Osman Khalid Butt, Amna Ilyas, Nisho, and Nayyar Ejaz

The much-awaited Pakistani movie Baaji is the directorial debut of Saqib Malik.

A press releasing describing the film reads:

“The film is a social drama-cum-thriller set against the backdrop of a fading Lollywood and the emerging new order of the Pakistan film industry.”

Actress Meera makes a comeback in Pakistani films, playing the main role in the movie.

Osman Khalid Butt, Ali Kazmi, Mohsin Abbas Haider, Amna Ilyas, Nisho, and Nayyar Ejaz are also part of this movie.

Speaking about her return and praising the other actors Meera told the media:

“I have not just acted in Baaji, I have lived in this film. It’s been an excellent experience. Aamna is a hardworker and she is keen on learning and acing her act.

“She is a natural actor and saw glimpses of Shabana Azmi in her.

“Osman is someone who lives and breathes his role.”

“He wouldn’t even get out of his character after the scene was over. I found his focus and professionalism very inspiring.”

Meera’s comeback film Baaji is likely to hit cinemas in the middle of 2019.

As many Pakistani films are coming out 2019, which one do you look forward to the most?

Well, the great thing is that there are a few more films possibly in the pipeline, which can excite fans. A sequel to Teefa in Trouble (2018) may also be on the cards.

Naturally one can expect some of the upcoming Pakistani films to do well, whilst others may struggle.

With cinema being a key platform in the country, everyone will closely examine these upcoming Pakistani films. Hopefully, Lollywood fans will get to see good cinema in 2019.
