Sana Askari has opened up about her battle with postpartum depression following the birth of her son Rayan.
Sana was a guest on Samaa TV’s morning show and she told host Madeha Naqvi that she contemplated divorce as she struggled with depression.
She revealed that she had not told anyone about her pregnancy and for the first five months, only her husband, mother and mother-in-law knew she was pregnant.
The reason for this was that she previously suffered two miscarriages.
As a result, she wanted to do everything she could to protect her pregnancy from the evil eye.
Sana revealed that when she gave birth to her son, she was immediately faced with challenges.
One of those was that she was not taught how to breastfeed her child correctly.
She found herself constantly crying and unable to explain her emotions, unaware that she was showing signs of depression.
The situation escalated when her son became ill at three months old and she had to take him to the hospital for treatment.
At the same time, she was hit with the news that her mother was dealing with breast cancer.
As a new mother who was now seeing her own mother struggle, Sana was thrown further into postpartum depression and she admitted that as things worsened, she began feeling hate towards her husband.
Sana Askari stated that her anger towards her husband intensified so much that she considered divorce as she was unable to control her mental health.
She recognised she needed help when she found herself channelling her frustration on her son, and after talking to a friend she decided to make an appointment with a psychologist.
Sana revealed that with the help of therapy, she was able to deal with her postpartum depression and begin her recovery.
This episode highlighted the importance of recognising when a woman was suffering from postpartum depression and that new mothers should be encouraged to speak about their mental health freely.
