Ameer Balaj Tipu, a prominent figure in Lahore’s underworld and owner of a transportation network, was shot dead at a wedding in the Chung area of the city on February 18, 2024.
According to reports, Balaj was attending the wedding of a former deputy superintendent of police’s son.
At the wedding, an armed man opened fire, injuring Balaj.
Two other guests were also injured in the shooting.
According to police, the gunman was killed after Balaj’s armed associates retaliated.
The three casualties were rushed to Jinnah Hospital.
PML-N’s MNA-elect Attaullah Tarar also rushed to the hospital on receiving the news.
Police gathered at the hospital over fears of possible clashes as Balaj and his family had a history of feuds for at least three generations.
The two guests received treatment for their injuries, however, Balaj succumbed to his wounds.
It was reported that he was shot four times in the chest and he died due to excessive blood loss.
News of Ameer Balaj Tipu’s death elicited grief and fury among his supporters, who gathered at the hospital to mourn the death.
Some women were seen beating their chests and condemning the perpetrators while others voiced their allegiance to Balaj.
Law enforcement authorities have sealed off the area and have launched a murder investigation, stating that Balaj was killed in a targeted attack.
The primary focus is to uncover the motive behind the shooting and identify the orchestrator. Currently, no arrests have been made.
Balaj’s funeral will take place at Shah Alam Chowk. He leaves behind a wife and two sons.
Ameer Balaj Tipu was widely regarded as one of the most influential and feared personalities in Lahore’s underworld, underscoring the gravity of his untimely demise.
According to DIG (Operations) Ali Nasir Rizvi, the incident could be the result of a longstanding feud.
However, he said the group responsible would be identified once an investigation is completed.
His father Arif Amir, also known as Tipu Truckanwala, was killed during a targeted attack at Allama Iqbal International Airport in 2010.
Balaj’s grandfather had also been embroiled in an age-old feud, adding to the family’s history of violence.
Ameer Balaj Tipu had political connections, with reports suggesting he had recently joined Nawaz Sharif’s PML-N party after leaving Imran Khan’s PTI.
