Police have arrested a Pakistani father after he threw his five children into a canal after a heated row with his wife.

The incident happened at Balloki–Sulemanki Link Canal, in Pattoki, Punjab on December 6, 2020.

Police identified the accused as Muhammad Ibrahim. They also said the incident resulted in the death of two of the children while the other three remain missing.

It was reported that Ibrahim had become depressed over his worsening financial condition. He took the extreme step after a heated argument with his wife.

Police were alerted to the incident and quickly arrived at the scene where they arrested Ibrahim, a rickshaw driver.

More officers and rescue officials turned up in a bid to rescue the children. They pulled the bodies of two-year-old Muhammad Ahmed and Fiza Bibi, aged four, out from the canal but both had died.

Desperate efforts are being made to locate and rescue Nafeesa Bibi, aged five, Muhammad Zain, aged eight, and Nadia Parveen, aged 10.

The Pakistani father was taken in for questioning where he told police that he would often get into arguments with his wife Razia Bibi, mainly over his financial situation.

The constant rows led to the wife going to stay with her parents.

Ibrahim went to his in-laws to see his children, however, the couple broke into an argument over financial issues. In addition, his in-laws taunted him.

This prompted Ibrahim to take his children in anger. He drove to the canal where he threw them in one by one.

Following his arrest and confession, Ibrahim has said that he is “missing” his children.

In a statement to police, Ibrahim said he was not thinking straight after a row with his wife. The taunting of his in-laws infuriated him to a point that he threw his own children into the canal.

He regrets his actions and said he loves his children a lot, adding that he misses them a lot.

Recalling the incident, Ibrahim said he may not have thrown his children into the canal if they had screamed at the time.

According to police, Ibrahim has three previous FIRs registered against him at different police stations in Kasur. The cases related to robbery and possession of illegal firearms.

The investigation is continuing and a search for the other children is ongoing.
