speculation is mounting regarding the reasons behind her arrest.

Renowned Bangladeshi actress and filmmaker Meher Afroz Shaon was taken into custody by the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.

She was picked up from the capital’s Dhanmondi area on February 6, 2025.

The arrest was confirmed by Additional Commissioner Rezaul Karim Mallick, who stated that she was detained in the evening.

Authorities have yet to disclose specific charges against Shaon.

However, initial reports suggest she is being questioned in connection with an alleged conspiracy against the state.

A notification from the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) confirmed that she was taken to the DB office for interrogation.

Meanwhile, in a separate but seemingly related incident, a group of individuals set fire to Shaon’s ancestral home in Narundi, Jamalpur.

The house, belonging to her late father, Mohammad Ali, was targeted by protesters amid rising political tensions.

Mohammad Ali had previously sought an Awami League nomination for the Jamalpur-5 constituency.

Shaon collected a nomination form in 2024 to contest a reserved seat in the 12th Parliament for women.

Shaon’s mother, Begum Tahura Ali, also previously held parliamentary positions.

She served as an MP from a reserved seat between 1996-2001 and again from 2009-2014.

Given her family’s political connections, speculation is mounting regarding the reasons behind her arrest.

Shaon is widely known for her contributions to Bangladeshi television and cinema.

She first gained prominence as a child artist, winning the reality show Notun Kuri.

Meher Afroz Shaon later made her acting debut in Humayun Ahmed’s drama Nokkhotrer Raat in 1996.

Over the years, she has built a distinguished career in film and television, earning a loyal fan base.

Her arrest comes amid ongoing nationwide unrest, following the controversial Bulldozer March demonstrations that began in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi area on February 5.

The protests, sparked by a speech from exiled former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, have spread across the country.

Protesters reportedly used excavators and cranes to demolish Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s residence on Dhanmondi Road 32.

They also set fire to Hasina’s home at Sudha Sadan in Dhanmondi 5.

Similar acts of vandalism have been reported in Khulna, Jashore, Kushtia, Barishal, and Sylhet, where residences of Awami League leaders were attacked.

Authorities have not yet commented on whether Meher Afroz Shaon’s detention is directly linked to the unrest.

However, given her political ties and recent activities, her arrest is being closely scrutinised.

Further developments in the case are expected as the investigation unfolds.
