Banalata Sen, the upcoming government-funded film directed by Masud Hasan Ujjal, has officially wrapped production.

It is now headed to the Bangladesh Film Censor Board for clearance.

With post-production stages like dubbing, editing, and scoring already completed, the film is being lined up for a planned release in September 2025.

This marks Ujjal’s second directorial venture after the critically praised Unoponchash Batash, which came out in 2020.

His return is particularly notable given the film’s literary inspiration and its cultural timing.

At the heart of Banalata Sen is Masuma Rahman Nabila, who plays the lead in what will be her fourth film.

Known more widely as a television presenter, she was last seen opposite Shakib Khan in the 2024 hit Toofan.

However, her journey to this role wasn’t straightforward.

Initially approached for a different part, Nabila recalled asking for the full script before making any commitments.

Upon reading it, she was so taken by the titular character that she declined the role she was offered.

She reportedly told the director: “Had you offered me the role of Banalata Sen, I would’ve said yes instantly.”

Her boldness paid off. She was invited to audition for the lead and went through the process three times before securing the role.

Ujjal later said her screen test perfectly captured the essence he had envisioned for the character.

In reflecting on her experience, Nabila described working on the film as something truly special.

Praising his cinematic style and creative depth, she said:

“Ujjal bhai’s films feel like poetry.”

The film is a tribute to poet Jibanananda Das, whose poem, Banalata Sen, inspired the project.

As Ujjal explained, the film aims to celebrate the poet’s legacy on what will be the 125th anniversary of his birth.

He said:

“I’ve always felt Jibanananda Das deserves a place among names like William Wordsworth, Edgar Allan Poe, or TS Eliot.”

While the storyline remains under wraps, the film is expected to resonate with poetry lovers and cinephiles alike.

Its cultural ambition, literary grounding, and carefully selected cast have already stirred anticipation.

If all goes to plan, Banalata Sen will hit theatres in September 2025.

It will offer audiences a lyrical journey through visual storytelling shaped by deep literary admiration.
