Jehan Rajendra, Founder of dating app Agilis, says these developments are changing how people view safety when using dating apps.

“Platforms are becoming much more proactive about building safety features directly into the dating experience rather than relying entirely on users to protect themselves.”

One area receiving growing attention is identity verification and automated screening, with technology being used to detect suspicious profiles, unusual activity and potential warning signs before users meet in person.

Jehan explains: “Technology can help flag risks earlier and make it harder for bad actors to operate unnoticed.

“The aim should always be to create a safer environment while still respecting people’s privacy.”

Real-time location sharing is another feature being used to provide additional reassurance for users meeting someone for the first time.

Where available, the tool allows people to share their location with a trusted friend or family member during a date.

Jehan says: “Knowing that someone you trust knows where you are can provide a lot of reassurance.

“It gives users another layer of control over their safety without changing the experience of the date itself.”

Many dating platforms are also offering in-app voice and video calling, allowing users to speak face-to-face before meeting offline without immediately sharing personal contact details.

Alongside these features, dating apps are improving reporting systems to help users flag inappropriate behaviour, suspicious accounts and unwanted contact.

Jehan says: “A clear reporting system and fast moderation are essential for building trust.

“People need to know that when they raise a genuine concern, it will be taken seriously.”

Automated systems can also help identify suspicious language, potential scams and patterns of behaviour that may require further review.

For people using dating apps, Jehan advises:

“Keep conversations within the app until you feel comfortable sharing personal details.”

“Use voice or video calls before meeting if that helps you feel more confident, and always tell someone you trust where you are going on a first date.

“If the platform provides additional safety tools, make use of them.”
