"what was the point of restricting me?"

Bangladeshi singer Kanak Chapa revealed that she was banned from the music industry for seven years due to her political identity.

The esteemed singer is renowned for her melodious voice and profound contributions to the music industry.

Despite being a three-time National Award winner, Kanak Chapa endured a challenging seven-year ban from state-run media and stage performances.

This was due to her political identity.

However, this period of isolation offered her invaluable insights, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Kanak revealed that during this time, she discovered the essence of simplicity.

The restrictions imposed on her artistic expression, though initially limiting, provided Kanak Chapa with a rare opportunity for introspection and contemplation.

Delving into books, nurturing family bonds, and exploring personal interests became pillars of strength during this period of seclusion.

Kanak said: “Although it may seem irrelevant, the Covid pandemic taught me a lot. I realised that one can survive with fewer possessions.

“Excessive food and luxuries are unnecessary, and true peace comes from standing closely with people in need.”

Reflecting on her career and the recognition she deserved but was often denied, Kanak Chapa expressed a sense of contentment.

It was due to the enduring impact of her music on audiences, transcending the confines of mainstream platforms.

She questioned: “I have already sung the songs I could, what was the point of restricting me?

“It doesn’t matter whether they play on TV channels or not, my songs have reached the audience and remained.”

Despite facing neglect from her country and the music industry, Kanak remains committed to her art.

“My country has always neglected me. I’ve rarely been invited to major stage programmes and have never been part of government delegations.

“The National Award jury knows how many times I’ve been deprived of the award.”

Addressing her stance on politics, the singer humbly acknowledged her limitations as a politically minded individual rather than a seasoned political figure.

She emphasised the importance of knowledge and dedication required for active political engagement.

However, she expressed her willingness to serve as a representative for the common people if the public wanted her to.

Kanak Chapa added: “Being active in politics requires in-depth study.

“However, if ordinary people want to see me as their representative, I’ll try to fulfil that role with my honesty and dedication.”
