"But at the same time, we can’t ignore the reality"
An Indian entrepreneur has revealed the reasons why she and her family are leaving the UK after almost 10 years of living in London.
Pallavi Chhibber shared her decision in an Instagram video, citing rising expenses, high taxes, and stagnant opportunities as the main reasons.
Pallavi said: “I’m leaving London after being here nearly 10 years of being here.”
She explained that many followers had asked about the move, prompting her to outline the factors behind the family’s departure:
“The main reason is that me and my husband feel London has become a city more for survival, not for growth.
“Unfortunately, we don’t see long-term opportunities for either of us in this country.”
The entrepreneur pointed to the cost of living crisis, which she said had made London “obnoxiously expensive”.
As an example, she said a family meal at Dishoom cost £80, the equivalent to over Rs. 8,500.
“I’ve been a hardcore London girl, and a part of my heart will forever belong here.
“But at the same time, we can’t ignore the reality: the cost of living crisis, survival issues, and rising expenses.”
Another reason she listed was taxation in the UK. She claimed they were paying 42% as direct tax, and almost 50% when indirect taxes were included.
Pallavi clarified that she had paid UK taxes for a decade while retaining an Indian passport.
She also cited limited opportunities for her children, saying shrinking job prospects made her uncertain about their future in the UK.

The video sparked debate among her followers.
Some supported the decision, with one writing: “You’ve definitely made the right decision.
“I’m sure it wasn’t an easy one, but consider yourself fortunate, very few people are able to recognise this vicious cycle.”
Others disagreed, pointing out that economic pressures are global, with one saying:
“When you travel, you realise how blessed we are. Prices have increased all over the world sadly.”
Another commenter expressed doubts about alternatives: “Trust me on the US. I live state next door to Louisiana. And it’s not the same here anymore, especially after Trump. I am afraid Indians like us are doomed to be nomads.”
Critics also questioned Pallavi’s perspective.
One comment read: “If you are comparing pounds/dollars with rupees even after living for 10 years, you need to go back to. You would never fit in.”
