Jaya Prada has been sentenced to six months in jail over a case which has been in court for a number of years.
The prison sentence comes after Jaya was convicted of failure to pay her theatre employees.
The movie theatre, which was situated in Chennai, closed down a few years ago after Jaya and her business partner faced financial losses.
Collectively, the employees filed a complaint with the Government Labour Insurance Corporation against Jaya and her two associates, claiming they had taken money from their paychecks.
It was alleged that the money taken was for the employees’ state insurance but the amount had not been deposited with the Government Insurance Corporation.
The corporation then took the step to sue the actress-turned-politician along with her acquaintances, Ram Kumar and Raja Babu.
It was reported that Jaya admitted to her wrongdoing and promised to pay back her theatre staff, and requested that the court dismiss the case.
However her appeal was refused and as a result, Jaya received a six-month prison sentence and was fined Rs. 5,000 (£45).
Veteran star Shatrughan Sinha admitted he was unaware of the case against his co-star.
He said: “I wasn’t aware about it until you told me.
“I know her as a very good friend of mine. I respect her a lot, however, since a few days we have not been in touch.”
Shatrughan Sinha went on to say that she was a good person and the matter would be resolved.
He continued: “I have worked with her, she’s a very good lady. Her legal team will manage it.
“I am sure it must be from a lower court because the fine is pretty less and it is not that serious an issue, nor a political matter.
“Jaya Prada is very capable of solving this issue.
“She’s very sharp, a very nice human being, and I’m sure they will sort the issue for her.”
“I’ve only admiration and best wishes for her.”
Jaya was one of the most popular actors in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, and has worked with the likes of Amitabh Bachchan.
She was dubbed one of the most iconic and influential actors in Telugu and Hindi cinema and was labelled as the most beautiful actress of her time.
Jaya has starred in films such as Sargam, Ghar Ghar Ki Kahani, Tohfa and Aaj Ka Arjun.
Jaya joined politics in 1994 and is currently a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party.
