“That’s what happened that day."
Jackie Shroff opened up about using a Marathi expletive during a 1998 advert to spread awareness about the central government’s polio eradication mission.
While the advert was successful, the actor admitted that he didn’t have an enjoyable experience during the shoot.
On Ranveer Allahbadia’s podcast, Jackie talked about having a hard time with the Hindi dialogue, which caused some unintentional but funny outbursts on set.
His approachable demeanour and sense of humour make him a beloved figure both on and off-screen.
In the behind-the-scenes footage, Jackie Shroff is seen repeatedly saying “maushi chi…” out of frustration.
This clip quickly went viral.
Jackie admitted that he struggled with pronouncing some of the Hindi words in the ad.
“I tried my best to deliver the lines, but some words are just hard to say, right?
“That’s what happened that day. But we later made another ad, and it turned out really well.”
He defended using the phrase, stating it had a “cultural impact” and it helped increase awareness about polio.
Jackie said that while some people found it amusing, others didn’t.
He continued: “I tell them, if nothing else, it at least made people aware of polio and the importance of giving the drops to children.”
Jackie also talked about the importance of raising awareness about Thalassemia.
Thalassemia is a genetic blood disorder that causes lower-than-normal haemoglobin levels in the body.
Jackie Shroff revealed that he still uses the phrase from the old ad during his personal life.
He especially turns to it when he’s frustrated, choosing it over more common expressions like “yaar” or “uff”.
Even though it’s been more than two decades, the ad remains popular on social media and has now turned into a meme template among young people.
