The woman was repeatedly abused and gang-raped at these places.
An Indian woman who is said to be in her late 20s and from Uttar Pradesh was sold by her father for Rs. 10,000 (£100).
She was gang-raped by her ‘owner’ and his friends who had forced her to help with domestic work.
The traumatised woman later set herself on fire after Uttar Pradesh police officials allegedly refused to register her complaint.
The woman was taken to a hospital in Ghaziabad, near Delhi, where she is fighting for her life after suffering burns to 80% of her body.
It was reported that the woman had reported what had happened to her to the Hapur SP as well as other senior officials.
The Delhi Commission for Women Chairperson Swati Maliwal explained that the woman had been sold following her husband’s death.
She explained that the woman was sold to a man, who had taken loans from several people. He forced the woman to work as domestic help for those people without paying her.
The woman was repeatedly abused and gang-raped at these places.
When she went to the police and they refused to help, she attempted suicide by setting herself on fire.
Ms Maliwal wrote to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath saying that the woman had “suffered intolerable abuse at the hand of the Uttar Pradesh Police” which led to her attempted suicide.
She urged him to investigate the police officials in Hapur district.
Ms Maliwal wrote: “The Delhi Commission for Women is in receipt of a representation from a survivor of gang-rape belonging to Hapur.
“The survivor has suffered unimaginable harassment at the hands of the UP Police in Hapur who have refused to register an FIR despite repeated complaints.
“This insensitivity and shameful conduct of the UP Police compelled the survivor to immolate herself.”
Officers hit back at Ms Maliwal’s claims, saying that senior officials did not turn her away and said that an investigation was being conducted.
An FIR was registered against 14 men for the alleged rape but they have not made any arrests.
Hapur SP Yashvir Singh said police are also investigating whether the Indian woman set herself on fire or if it was done by someone else.
He also said that the alleged incidents of abuse and rape are five years old and they happened at various places.
Police officials have talked to locals about the woman’s complaints but there were none who verified the woman’s accusations.
SP Singh added that her attempted suicide was not down to the police failing to register a complaint.
