He returned to find his two children dead, both foaming at the mouth
Indian mother, Abirami Kumar, aged 25, of Chennai, was caught by police officers on Sunday, September 2, 2018, after poisoning her two children and attempted to murder her husband.
Her lover Sundaram, aged 23, who worked at a local biryani shop was also caught helping her escape.
She confessed that she had given both her children and her husband, Vijay, aged 30, milk spiked with sleeping pills on Thursday, August 30, 2018.
It is heard that one of the children, Karunika, aged four, died on the same night as the woman did not let Vijay see her the next day, before leaving for work.
The killer mother told him not to disturb Karunika as she was ‘sleeping’.
The dose did not have an effect on her other child, so Kumar gave Ajay, aged six, another heavy dose during the evening of Friday, August 31, 2018.
She planned to do the same to her husband when he returned from work.
However, Mr Kumar was held back at the private bank where he worked due to the end of the month activities.
He returned home on Saturday, September 1, 2018, to find his two children dead, both foaming at the mouth and his wife missing.
Neighbours heard Vijay’s cries and came to his aid. Police officers were quickly informed.
A police officer said:
“After poisoning the children, the woman tried to suffocate them by closing their mouth and nose.”
Vijay told officers that his wife’s illicit relationship could be the reason behind the double murder.
He revealed that he knew of the affair and when he asked Abirami about it, she left to move in with Sundaram.
Officers quickly found Sundaram at the biryani shop where he worked.
He led them to Abirami’s scooter, which was left near the Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus, where she had boarded the bus to Nagercoil.
The two planned to elope to Thiruvananthapuram to start life afresh.
Police knew Abirami would be waiting for her lover at Nagercoil so police took him there and called her from his phone number.
Abirami was caught by officers when she came for Sundaram.
Police said: “They made Sundaram call her to meet in the town when she reached, police nabbed her.”
Both were brought back to Chennai, where she confessed to the double murder and an attempted murder.
The two were remanded in judicial custody and will be subsequently have a hearing in court.
