she turned down his advances.
An Indian man was arrested for murdering his live-in girlfriend after she allegedly refused to have sex with him.
The suspect was arrested on December 13, 2023, and was identified as 24-year-old Praveen Singh Dhakad.
The violent incident took place at a rented house in the Raoji Bazaar area of Indore, Madhya Pradesh.
Reportedly, Dhakad and the 20-year-old woman connected through Instagram.
After frequently messaging one another, they decided to move in together.
Dhakad and his girlfriend had been living in the rented property for a few days before an argument broke out on the night of December 7.
Dhakad wanted to have sex with the woman but she turned down his advances.
This angered the man and an argument ensued.
As the woman repeatedly refused to get intimate with Dhakad, he picked up a pair of scissors and stabbed his girlfriend in the neck.
Bleeding profusely, the victim fell and died instantly.
Dhakad realised his violent actions and started panicking. He subsequently fled the house, locking it and taking his lover’s mobile phone.
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Abhinay Vishwakarma explained that the victim’s body was discovered in the house on December 9.
After discovering the young woman’s body, an investigation was launched and a search took place to trace Dhakad.
Dhakad was eventually located and arrested.
The tragic incident has raised questions over the growing trend of live-in relationships in India.
In Parliament, BJP MP Dharambir Singh raised the issue and said:
“I want to bring to the notice of the government and Parliament a very serious issue.”
“Indian culture is known for its philosophy of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (world is one family)’ and brotherhood.
“Our social fabric is different from others in the world. The whole world is impressed by our unity in diversity.
“A large section of society even to this day gives priority to marriages arranged by parents or relatives.
“The bride and the groom seek the consent of the parents and arranged marriages are based on a match of several common factors such as social and individual values and likes as well as family backgrounds.
“Marriage is considered a sacred relationship that continues for seven generations.
“Divorce rate is about 1.1% in India as compared with America, which has a rate of about 40%.
He called live-in relationships a “dangerous and harmful disease that is affecting society”.
