The Bengali culture and music landscape has lost one of its luminaries, Arun Chakraborty, who passed away on November 23, 2024, at the age of 80.

Known for his iconic poem turned song, ‘Lal Paharir Deshe Ja’, Chakraborty died at his home in Chinsurah, West Bengal, surrounded by family.

His passing was confirmed by family friend Saptarshi Ray Bardhan.

Chakraborty’s body was taken to Chinsurah Rabindra Bhavan, where fans could pay their respects before his funeral rites at Shyam Babu’s Ghat.

Despite being in relatively good health and having attended a cultural event just a day prior, he had recently experienced a mild cold.

Reportedly, he struggled with lung issues since the Covid-19 pandemic.

Born on September 16, 1946, in Kolkata, Arun Chakraborty initially pursued a career as a civil engineer after graduating from Shibpur Engineering College.

However, his passion for poetry ultimately led him to become a full-time poet.

He had been residing in Chinsurah since 1990, where he drew inspiration from the rich Bengali folk culture.

Chakraborty’s most celebrated work, ‘Lal Paharir Deshe Ja’, was crafted in 1972.

The poem was inspired by the scent of mahua flowers he encountered one day while passing through a railway station.

This moment struck him profoundly, leading him to reflect on the beauty of nature and the displacement of the mahua tree.

His original title for the poem was ‘Srirampur Istishane Mahuagachhta’, but it gained wider popularity after being reworked to appeal to Baul musicians.

Throughout his life, Arun Chakraborty embraced spontaneity and adventure, often seen as a free spirit akin to the Bauls of Bengal.

His friendships extended beyond the conventional, encompassing street vendors, fishermen, and artists.

This reflected his deep connection to the everyday lives of ordinary people.

He once said:

“I’ve spent my life as a wanderer.”

Chakraborty cherished solitude, often retreating into isolation to meditate and reconnect with his inner self.

Despite his artistic inclinations, he maintained a simple lifestyle, often greeting friends with warmth and hospitality.

His enduring legacy lies not only in his poetry but also in the love and joy he spread throughout his life.

As fans and admirers mourn his loss, Arun Chakraborty’s contributions to Bengali literature and culture will undoubtedly resonate for generations to come.

His penned lyrics and heartfelt poetry continue to inspire, ensuring that he remains a cherished figure in the hearts of many.
