"Why can’t they just create their own number?"
Ila Arun slammed the remix of ‘Choli Ke Peeche’. The reworked version of the song is from the upcoming film Crew.
The actress and singer had originally sung the song in Khal Nayak (1993). It was a duet with Alka Yagnik.
In the 1993 blockbuster, the song featured Madhuri Dixit (Inspector Gangotri ‘Ganga’ Agnihotri) and Sanjay Dutt (Balaram ‘Ballu’ Prasad).
The revamp from Crew is picturised on Tabu (Geeta Sethi), Kareena Kapoor Khan (Jasmine Rana) and Kriti Sanon (Divya Bajwa).
Getting candid about her thoughts on the ‘Choli Ke Peeche’ remix, Ila said:
“I would be in no position to refuse [the remix], but ethically, it’s wrong.
“If they had just spoken to me about it, it would have felt good.
“They called me five minutes before the launch of the song and asked for my blessing.
“What else I could do, except give them my blessings? I was dumbfounded, but couldn’t ask them, ‘Why have you done this’?
“So my reaction to the song is exactly what Alka Yagnik’s reaction is.
“They say it’s a new thing to reach out to the younger generation. But why should we?
“That’s what I feel. You don’t have to give them what they are looking for.
“Why can’t they just create their own number?
“Young directors should create energetic, powerful songs that will be liked by the younger generation.
“The fact is that everyone is complimenting me that I am rocking, but am I not rocking?
“I am shaken up by this. Even the younger generation is calling me and telling me that my song has been recreated and Kareena Kapoor Khan is dancing to the number.
“But what can I do about that? I can only say I am dumbfounded.”
“In my opinion, if you want to recreate, you should work with the original artists and keep them in the loop.
“And if you are making any profit, then they also should get compensation for it.”
Akshay Raheja, who composed the remix, revealed that he “didn’t feel any pressure” when creating the remix.
Crew is scheduled to be released on March 29, 2024.
The original version of ‘Choli Ke Peeche’ was composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal, with lyrics by Anand Bakshi.
‘Choli Ke Peeche’ was a smash hit in the ’90s. For the rendition, Alka Yagnik and Ila Arun jointly won the 1994 Filmfare Award for ‘Best Female Playback Singer’.
However, the song was shrouded in controversy due to the sexual connotations attached to the lyrics.
The words, ‘Choli Ke Peeche’ translate to ‘Behind the blouse’.
