"It's a very interesting story."
Netflix has released the trailer of the upcoming documentary The Roshans.
The Roshan family is among the most prolific in Indian cinema. The saga began with the music composer Roshan Lal Nagrath.
He composed music for blockbusters such as Taj Mahal (1963) and Chitralekha (1964), working with legends such as Mukesh and Mohammad Rafi.
Nagrath had two sons – Rakesh Roshan and Rajesh Roshan.
Rajesh, aged 19, followed in his father’s footsteps and became a music director with Kunwaara Baap (1974).
In a music career spanning over five decades, Rajesh has worked with several generations of singers from Kishore Kumar to Shreya Ghoshal.
Meanwhile, Rakesh started his innings as an actor and later became a successful director with Khudgarz (1987).
His son, Hrithik Roshan, debuted with Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai (2000), and has become one of the most loved and popular Bollywood superstars.
The documentary will chronicle the legacy of the family, with exclusive interviews with celebrities and family members.
The trailer begins with Hrithik listening to one of his grandfather’s songs.
He comments: “It’s a very interesting story how our surname went from Nagrath to Roshan.”
Veteran singer Asha Bhosle then says: “It’s not very often that an artist’s entire family turns out to be artists too.
“But this has happened in Roshan Ji’s family.”
Later in the trailer, Prem Chopra says: “Unfortunately, Roshan Sahab passed away very early and both the brothers were left in their teens.”
Rajesh Roshan explains: “All the music I inherited comes naturally, as it is in my genes.”
The trailer continues to show Rakesh stating: “No era lasts forever. I was ready to work hard but success wasn’t coming my way.
“Then I decided to be a director. And when I’m a director, Rakesh Roshan won’t be my actor.”
The trailer goes on to display the phenomenon of Hrithik Roshan’s success in 2000.
Hrithik’s close friend and actor, Abhishek Bachchan, reminisces: “He was very happy being quiet and in the background.”
Preity Zinta cheekily adds: “I won’t reveal his secrets to you.”
The documentary will also depict the tragic incident when Rakesh was shot by unknown assailants in 2000.
Veteran scriptwriter and lyricist Javed Akhtar says: “The values that Roshan Sahab came with 75 years ago are still in his family.”
The documentary will be a four-part series and will also feature interviews from Karan Johar, Ranbir Kapoor, Vicky Kaushal, Shah Rukh Khan, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and Sanjay Leela Bhansali.
Sonu Nigam will also share his memories of being associated with the family.
The series promises to pay a fitting tribute to one of the most legendary clans of Indian cinema.
The Roshans is directed by Shashi Ranjan and will be premiered on Netflix on January 17, 2025.
