Onia also expressed her desire for Pakistani citizenship.
Onia Andrew Abson, a woman who was stranded in Pakistan after her lover rejected her, has refused to leave the country, demanding $20,000 and Pakistani citizenship.
After arrangements were made for her return to the US, she staged a protest at a women’s police station.
Onia insisted that she would not leave unless her financial demands were met.
The woman travelled to Pakistan to marry her 19-year-old online boyfriend Nidal Ahmed Memon, leaving her husband and children.
But when his family disapproved of the relationship, Nidal rejected her, leaving Onia stranded in Pakistan with an expired visa.
Her plight came to light when Sindh Governor Kamran Khan Tessori encountered a crowd surrounding her at the airport.
Distressed and desperate, Onia shared her story with the governor, who immediately stepped in to assist.
Governor Tessori arranged for her return to the United States, ensuring her safe departure from Pakistan.
Onia was transferred to a women’s police station, however, Airport Security Force official Faria Sudhar said the woman appeared to be mentally unstable.
Despite officials arranging a Qatar Airways flight for her departure, she refused to get on it.
She initially demanded $5,000 a week before a request for a total of $20,000, insisting she was owed compensation.
Onia also expressed her desire for Pakistani citizenship.
At Jinnah International Airport, her refusal to board the flight caused a 36-minute delay.
Meanwhile, police detained Nidal for questioning, though his family had already vacated their home.
Previously, authorities with assistance from the Sindh government and the JDC Foundation, finalised her departure arrangements.
They covered her medical expenses, ensuring she could return to the US.
However, Onia caused a scene and refused to board that flight.
As they couldn’t place her on the flight against her will, she remains in Pakistan for the time being.
The unusual case has sparked debate on social media, with many blaming Nidal for misleading Onia.
Meanwhile, others questioned her decision to abandon everything for an online relationship.
Some believe it is a ploy to extort money from the government.
One person wrote on social media: “All of it is the game of money.”
Another commented: “They should find the boy and make him marry her. That’s the only solution.”
Despite her insistence on staying in Pakistan, officials made it clear that she had to leave due to visa regulations.
The American woman only has a 15-day permit to stay in the country.
