"I'm not looking to directly monetise our Instagram."
The creator of Huda Beauty, Huda Kattan has spoken about the time she rejected doing an Instagram post for $185,000.
While influencers make extra cash by uploading photos with brands onto Instagram, for Huda, working with a brand on a sponsored post is not so simple.
The beauty blogger and businesswoman explained how followers can quickly identify if something is fake.
She said: “I don’t like to force content. If it doesn’t feel right, there’s no way in hell I’m going to do it.
“If it’s fake, you’re going to know it in my face.”
She continued to talk about her feelings towards sponsored content, stating:
“If I don’t really have a certain beauty concern, I’m going to be lying and it just won’t work.”
Huda’s story is one that thousands of aspiring beauty bloggers can only dream of.
After she left her career in finance, Huda made a living out of her Instagram account and also founded her cosmetic brand Huda Beauty. She boasts over 37 million followers.
The entrepreneur regularly shares blog posts and makeup tutorials on her Instagram that she says come from an authentic place. Many of her ideas come from her own beauty concerns.
Despite the success, Huda insists that she is not in it for the money. Her focus is on delivering real content, saying:
“I’m not looking to directly monetise our Instagram. Directly being able to do shoppable links – when that happens, sure, why not? But now, I don’t want it to feel like it’s not real.”
Huda has turned down several sponsorship opportunities but one which has attracted attention is that she rejected one from American talk show host Oprah Winfrey.
The beauty mogul said:
“Once, I got offered $185,000 to do one post, and I was so close to doing it – I genuinely loved the product.”
“We were just about to post it, and my team was like, ‘This is the caption,’ with ‘#ad.’ I just couldn’t do it.”
She added that while the money would have helped her and her husband, she turned it down because she felt uncomfortable with it.
Huda continued: “I thought about Oprah. I was like, would Oprah do that? No, she wouldn’t.
“Luckily, my husband was able to support our family financially, so we didn’t have to.”
