The ChatGPT GO plan will also enable better memory retention
OpenAI has launched a new paid subscription in India called ChatGPT GO. Priced at Rs. 399 (£3.40) per month, it is far cheaper than the Rs. 1,999 (£17) Plus Plan.
The company enabled local currency pricing for all plans last week. With GO, users can now also pay through UPI, India’s widely used payment framework.
Nick Turley, VP at OpenAI and head of ChatGPT, said the plan gives more value.
He said this plan will increase message, image generation, and file uploads by 10 times over the free tier.
The ChatGPT GO plan will also enable better memory retention for more personalised responses.
From a conversion perspective, the Plus plan has cost more than £10 for Indian users. The GO plan is designed as a budget-friendly option for those relying on chat, image generation, and file processing.
Software engineer Tibor Blaho, known for AI product leaks, had earlier hinted at the plan’s launch.
Currently, the plan is restricted to India. OpenAI’s support page states expansion to other regions is in the works.
In July 2025, Turley revealed ChatGPT now serves more than 700 million weekly users globally, up from 500 million in March. OpenAI’s image-generation feature, introduced in March, has driven higher usage in India.
CEO Sam Altman recently described India as the company’s second-largest market and previously met with India’s IT Minister to discuss a plan to create a low-cost AI ecosystem.
The GO plan aims to deepen that reach.
We just launched ChatGPT Go in India, a new subscription tier that gives users in India more access to our most popular features: 10x higher message limits, 10x more image generations, 10x more file uploads, and 2x longer memory compared with our free tier. All for Rs. 399. ??

Data from analytics firm Appfigures shows India leads in ChatGPT app downloads, with over 29 million in the last 90 days.
But revenues from the country stood at only £2.6 million in that period.
Industry observers believe this move could boost subscriptions. With India’s internet user base topping 850 million, AI firms are competing for market share.
Perplexity partnered with Airtel last month to offer free Pro subscriptions. Google also launched a free AI Pro plan for Indian students for one year.
While OpenAI has avoided freebies, experts expect affordable pricing to drive more conversions in India.
For everyday users, this launch means fewer interruptions due to usage caps, smoother workflows, and greater creative freedom.
Whether drafting long documents, generating images, or uploading files for analysis, the GO plan provides enough capacity for real-world productivity without the high subscription cost.
